AKUG.PT #5 : Event streaming with Kafka CDC? Why, When & How

We are pleased to announce our AKUG.PT #5 community event!

Change Data Capture (CDC) has been a popular pattern to extract event from a transactional log usually to perform asynchronous replication limiting the impacts on the operational database. Apache Kafka® offers support for CDC with its ecosystem of connectors such a Kafka Connect for instance. But when to use it, for which use-cases? How to deploy and operate it? How does it fit in the overall architecture?

Paulo Marques, Salomé Ascenso will be our speakers for this event, their talk and bios are available below. Antoine Craske will introduce the overall architecture where Apache Kafka® and the CDC first.

TALK : Why, When & How to use Kafka CDC?
In a complex IT system moving to an Event-Driven Approach (EDA) it is not always possible to re-implement all components to be EDA-compliant. Therefore, in the design of solutions, teams need to take into account legacy systems that are critical sources of data. So, the question is: how can we consume data from legacy systems in an EDA environment? In La Redoute, we used Kafka CDC to answer this question. The goal of this talk is to share about the challenges and opportunities that Kafka CDC presents us.

SPEAKER : Paulo Marques
Paulo is a Software Developer, currently working for Polarising as Fullstack Developer, coaching developers in frontend frameworks and collaborating in event driven architectures and microservices projects. With over 20 years in software development, he focused on Java ecosystem and web frameworks. When Paulo's not working, you can find him in a tennis court, hiking 7 miles or in technology meetup events.
