About Huron Valley Toastmasters
Huron Valley Toastmasters is a small (~8-12 people per meeting is fairly common), welcoming club that strikes a balance when it comes to experienced Toastmasters and new members. Some Huron Valley Toastmasters have been here for decades, while others have only recently started their Toastmaster journey. Our club members also come from many different backgrounds. We have university professors, entrepreneurs, volunteers (one of which was in the Peace Corps!), writers, world travelers, and more!
What makes Huron Valley Toastmasters so special?
- Hybrid setup. We allow for virtual meetings every week, but on the second and fourth Tuesdays, we also allow for a hybrid structure. Members and guests have the opportunity to build proficiency with both meeting contexts.
- Ample opportunity for speaking. Given that we are a small but dynamic club, members and guests will get plenty of opportunities to speak in a friendly, supportive environment.
- Supportive club personality. If you ever have a question or need assistance, our members are ready to jump in and give you a hand. This is an excellent opportunity to work on skills such as leadership, teamwork, English, and comfort with public speaking.
Here is the structure of a typical Huron Valley Toastmasters meeting:
- Success stories and gratitudes (we enjoy starting out on a positive note! There's also an opportunity for introductions if there are guests)
- Team Introductions (Laughmaster, Tipmaster, Timer, and Grammarian/Ah-Ha Counter)
- Speeches (1 - 2 speeches each meeting)
- Speech evaluations (we call this the "gift" portion of the meeting, because we view evaluations as gifts!)
- Tabletopics (a 1-2 minute impromptu speaking opportunity - stories and creativity are encouraged!)
- Grammarian/Ah-Ha Counter Report (evaluates the club's usage of the English language, also highlighting funny, clever, or interesting phrases)
- General Evaluator Report (evaluates the club meeting overall)
- Toastmasters Spotlight (any upcoming Toastmasters opportunities)
- Closing (including some words of inspiration!)
