Green Software Big Picture - Andreas Weber
Over the last few years, the topic of sustainable software has rightly gained attention. Different organizations and communities are pushing this topic. They have proposed metrics, measurement methodologies and best practices catalogues. Cloud Providers created Emission dashboards and best practice recommendations to enable their users. In addition, many sustainability-related tools for various areas within software development and operation emerged. But how can all that be put together? Andreas Weber shows you a possible structure in a “Green Software Big Picture”. Without any claim to completeness but with the goal to provide some guidance when approaching this complex and important topic.
Why is our software using so much hardware resources to run? - Dr. Johann Förster
Looking at some practical examples, I would like to discuss the resource (in-)efficiency of current software, possible root causes (e.g. missing or misguided incentives) and common surprises/fallacies. This leads to why I think it is important to try to understand the behavior of the complex system beyond our own role.
Do you have a topic you would like to present? Let us know!
