NOVA Horror Club Screening and Discussion: Ringu (1998)

"People don't just die like that. And it's a closed coffin. Isn't that strange?"
Tragedy strikes the family of journalist Reiko Asakawa when her niece Tomoko dies suddenly under unexplained circumstances. As Reiko begins investigating rumors of a cursed artifact tied to her death, she discovers the legend is all too real — and that she has only seven days left to live. Turning to her ex-husband Ryuji for help, the two race to uncover the origin of the curse and find a way to stop it before time runs out.
Hideo Nakata’s Ringu strips horror down to one simple essential: the dread of inevitability. With its muted tone and deliberate pacing, the film creates a pervasive sense of unease that never fully releases its grip.
