Ideal love and practical women: The Merry Wives of Windsor: (Discussion)
Ideal love and practical women: The Merry Wives of Windsor: (Discussion)
Dear members, I hope that you will join us in closing the year with two comedies very much in keeping with the sonnets’ renunciation of ideal love! Indeed, idealized love and the practicalities of romance are heavily contrasted in Shakespeare’s *The Merry Wives of Windsor* (April) and The Two Gentlemen of Verona (May). In very different ways, both **plays challenge romantic posturing and expose the distance between lofty declarations of love and the actual conduct of men.** In *The Merry Wives of Windsor*, Shakespeare forces romance into the comedic rooms of everyday life, where the intelligence, wit, and the common sense of **women cut through male fantasy and self-importance**. Maryama Antoine **About the Play:** *The Merry Wives of Windsor* or **Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor i**s a comedy by William Shakespeare first published in 1602, though believed to have been written in or before 1597. The Windsor of the play's title is a reference to the town of Windsor, also the **location of Windsor Castle in Berkshire,** England. Though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV or early in the reign of Henry V, the play makes no pretence to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan-era English middle-class life. It features the character Sir John Falstaff, the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV, Part 1 and Part 2. It has been **adapted for the opera at least ten times.** The play is one of Shakespeare's lesser-regarded works among literary critics. **Tradition has it that *The Merry Wives of Windsor* was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I, who watching Henry IV, Part 1, is said to have asked Shakespeare to write a play depicting Falstaff in love.** **The Plot:** Falstaff arrives in Windsor very short of money. He decides that, to obtain financial advantage, he will court two wealthy married women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. Falstaff decides to send the women identical love letters and asks his servants – Pistol and Nym – to deliver them to the wives. When they refuse, Falstaff sacks them, and, in revenge, the men tell the husbands Ford and Page of Falstaff's intentions. Page is not concerned, but the jealous Ford persuades the Host of the Garter Inn to introduce him to Falstaff as a 'Master Brook' so that he can find out Falstaff's plans. Meanwhile, three different men are trying to win the hand of Page's daughter, Anne Page. Mistress Page would like her daughter to marry Doctor Caius, a French physician, whereas the girl's father would like her to marry Master Slender. Anne herself is in love with Master Fenton, but Page had previously rejected Fenton as a suitor due to his having squandered his considerable fortune on high-class living. Hugh Evans, a Welsh parson, tries to enlist the help of Mistress Quickly (servant to Doctor Caius) in wooing Anne for Slender, but the doctor discovers this and challenges Evans to a duel. The Host of the Garter Inn prevents this duel by telling each man a different meeting place, causing much amusement for himself, Justice Shallow, Page and others. Evans and Caius decide to work together to be revenged on the Host... **Sources:** Some elements of *The Merry Wives of Windsor* may have been **adapted from Il Pecorone, a collection of stories by Ser Giovanni Fiorentino**; one of these stories was included in **William Painter's** **The Palace of Pleasure.**

Deep Talk / In English
Deep Talk / In English
🍩🍰 Let's have a weekly deep talk in an intimate Parisian café, share a drink and have a good time with like-minded, lovely and chill people. 🥂☕ We're here to sip life in a childish, simple and non-serious way. 🙃 When was the last time you had a meaningful conversation? Or deepened your relationship with someone in your life? It's not easy to have a deep conversation. While small talk, which is typically casual and light-hearted, can help break the ice, it may not necessarily help you form a deep, emotional connection with someone. Whether it's with your friends, family, colleagues or romantic partners, having meaningful conversations is important for creating strong bonds. "Meaningful conversations help us understand ourselves and those around us better. They involve sharing important aspects of ourselves and actively listening, validating and connecting with others." We believe that a happy and healthy life is built on beautiful relationships and that loneliness kills us. That's it. It's not the number of friends that counts, it's the quality of the relationship. ✅ This group is adressed to : ● People who want to build deep, genuine and caring relationships in a small group that looks the same, where they feel comfortable and emotionally safe to talk emotionally and get intimate about anything in their lives. ● Simple, loving, kind, hyper/sensitive and lovely people who spend a lot of time in their bubble thinking about the meaning of life, passionate about personal development, philosophy, meaningful conversations, debates .... ⛔ Please don't subscribe if : ● You don't see yourself in the group's aims and beliefs. ● You're travelling for a short period of time and don't live or intend to live in Paris. ● You are not sure if you will be able to come, please update your status to allow others on the waiting list to join. An absence without notice will result in an irrevocable ban. Progress : ● ❗ For reservations, I'll send you a private Meetup message at least 5 hours before the meeting to confirm your reservation. If I don't receive a reply 2 hours before the meeting, I will send you a second message to let you know that you will be replaced by someone on the waitlist. ● 💚 We keep the session small, cosy and relaxed in a quiet place, prioritising regularity to encourage intimacy, connection, listening and speaking. (\~ 5/6 people) ● 🔖 On arrival, if you feel comfortable, you will be suggested to choose and associate several drawn Feelings and Needs cards to express how you really feel at the moment, to talk about ourselves and communicate effectively. ● 📝 The best way to make progress is to make the conversation easy and natural, with everyone making an effort to suggest and write down what you want to talk about. You can write down your favourite topics/questions before the meeting. The meeting is participative and invite everyone if you feel comfortable being a leader and a power of suggestion. Anyway, to keep the meeting running smoothly, I'll animate the meeting to make sure the conversation doesn't get wild or boring and I wouldn't hesitate to reframe people. In case of lack of inspiration we have a lot of deep conversation question card game which can help to find interesting questions. ● 🍕 (Not compulsory) After the meeting we can finish in a nearby restaurant for those who wish to relax or continue our conversation. Advice for a good moment : ● Leave your ego and mask at home, we are not here to impress anyone but to be ourselves with our strength, weakness, pride and shame. Come with an open/deep/emotional/complex thought and vulnerability. ● Ask open-ended questions and invite the other person to describe what a situation was like for them or how they felt. ● Don't hesitate to be vulnerable and share information about yourself if needed. Consider sharing personal information first to gain the other person's trust. ● Adopt an attitude of curiosity and genuine interest in what the other person is saying. Be thoughtful and try to put yourself in the other person's shoes so that you can see things from their perspective. Be truthful, caring and honest. ● Listen actively and ask follow-up questions. ● Be empathetic and offer emotional validation so that they feel seen and heard. It is forbidden to judge, but try to understand. ● ⏱ Be aware of your speaking time for Equally Speak. ● 🤫 Be aware never to provoke political or religious ideologies, but to accept differences of belief. Advice on non-violent communication can be given in the meeting to learn not to unintentionally hurt anyone when requested or needed. ● 🚨 Remember to maintain a safe, and benevolent environment. People who are considered to be disruptive, problematic or simply not in tune with the energy of the group will not be allowed to return. Finally, we're hug-friendly !!! 🤗

We just rarely slow down enough to notice. This reading party is your chance to disconnect from screens, unwind from the daily buzz, and meet like-minded people — while rediscovering your book through a completely different lens. A little escape into a different world — where time slows down, people are open to connect, and you can truly focus on yourself. The perfect start to your weekend. ✨ *** **What to expect:** 📖 Peaceful (me-)time to read that book you've been meaning to start (or finish!) 🎨 A Slow Art session that might just change the way you read... forever 🤝 The chance to meet and connect with like-minded (wannabe) booklovers 💬 A space where connection comes easily — no rush, no pressure, no notifications 🫖 Community vibes, a welcoming atmosphere, and plenty of time to relax 📵 Valuable time offline that leaves you feeling rested and fulfilled 🇫🇷 🇬🇧 French & English friendly — all our events are bilingual, so you can comfortably speak either language *** **The Program:** **10:00 – 10:30 \| Arrive & Make Yourself at Home** **10:30 – 11:00 \| Slow Art Session** We'll begin by looking at our books the way you'd look at a painting in a museum: slowly, curiously, without rushing to "get through it." Led by an Art Therapist specialised in Museum Art Therapy and Book Therapy (yes, that's me, Stefania, your city leader 🙋‍♀️), this session will invite you to truly *see* your book before you read it. We'll also explore the idea of Slow Reading, because... did you know that's a thing too? **11:00 – 12:00 \| Dive Into Your Book** Your time to sit back and enjoy undistracted reading time — perhaps with fresh eyes after the session. **12:00 – 13:00 \| Connect With Others** Chat and connect with others, but only if you feel like it. Meet new people, share stories about your favourite reads, and enjoy meaningful conversations. We create laid-back spaces where talking to strangers is the norm and connection is made easy. *** **What to Bring** Your current read, a book with a cover that makes your heart sing, or both. Comics, poetry, graphic novels — all literature is welcome here. Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Join us as we get together for a Discount Tuesday / Choose Your Movie event to see your choice of two great new films! Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event: THE CHRISTOPHERS: The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have a better inheritance when he dies. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning and James Corden. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a “dynamic, emotional and surprising journey” and a “compelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.” Others call the film, an “incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. But a bank robbery leads him to a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film comes from the same team that brought us Nobody and the John Wick series, so expect an over-the-top, action-filled thrill ride! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm-lM33Qw0&t=19s PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet in the lobby area about 30 minutes before showtime. Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised (GFC website preferred)! Please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. Showtimes and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
