NEW FORMAT - All-day leisurely educational hike!
Join us for an educational, all-day, 4-mile hike with approximately 950 feet of elevation gain. We'll take it at a relaxed, conversational pace with plenty of breaks built in for hands-on learning and discussion. Along the way, we’ll cover everything a new hiker needs to know—plus plenty of practical tips and field-tested tricks that even seasoned hikers will appreciate.
What if we told you that 8 pounds of gear in your pack could be everything you need to stay safe for days—and even help others if needed? Drawing on years of search and rescue experience, we’ve developed a tried-and-true gear list that every hiker should carry. During the hike, we’ll pass each item around, explain why it earns a place in your pack, and discuss how to use it effectively. You’ll walk away with greater confidence, a stronger margin of safety, and our top brand recommendations for essential gear.
After covering gear, we’ll dive into the practical skills and decision-making that keep hikers safe. We'll discuss:
• What to do during wildlife encounters—bears, snakes, coyotes, ticks, aggressive dogs
• How to identify hazardous plants • How to read trail blazes
• Trip planning
• Hiking alone
• What to do during lightning storms
• Water crossings
• Hiking with dogs
• LNT - Leave No Trace
• Self-rescue
This fun and engaging hike includes visits to an incredible viewpoint and an old iron mine. Along the way, you’ll learn what to pack, how to plan properly, what to consider before heading out, and how to handle unexpected situations with calm and confidence.
If you were to take one course to learn how to be prepared and safe when hiking, this would be it.
