RESERVOIR 13 by JON MCGREGOR. This novel details the 13 years following the disappearance of 13-year-old Rebecca Shaw in a Peak District village. The narrative focuses on the rhythm of rural life—seasons, farming, and village relationships—rather than the mystery itself, tracking how the community lives on, adapts, and is haunted by the unresolved tragedy.

The book is structured around the annual new year, showing how the disappearance becomes a part of the backdrop of rural life, with the search fading while daily life continues, with a large cast of characters, capturing snippets of their lives, marriages, and disappointments rather than focusing on a single protagonist.
The natural environment—wildlife, badgers, birds—is given equal weight to human drama, highlighting the indifference of nature to human loss.
