This group will meet to discuss one of the weird movies on the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha (https://366weirdmovies.com/the-weird-movie-list/). We can go beyond that list too -- nothing is set in stone.
Half of the time, you will watch the movie on your own and then come to the meeting to discuss it. In the other meetings, we will watch the movie together and then discuss it.
See this spreadsheet for information about the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha, including where you can find the movies streaming (though lots of that information is out of date.) 366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets

"Close-Up" Discussion: Watch it at Home First
Pryes Brewing Company, 1401 West River Road North, Minneapolis, MN, US"Close-Up" (1990) is weird in some ways, but isn't weird enough to be on the 366 Weird Movie list that I usually draw from. I thought it was worth diverging from the list to spread awareness of what I think is a brilliant and fascinating film.
I also hope to foster interest in Iranian cinema in general, which can provide a very important counterpoint to the typical Western conception of Iran. The Iranian films I've seen are very far from the dull propaganda for fundamentalist ideology that you might expect. Instead, they are complex, gently humorous, and often fascinatingly "meta" stories of compassion and empathy for ordinary people and their daily struggles. I believe Iranian films give the world a glimpse of the majority of the Iranian people, who are nothing like the fanatics who run the government (as of this writing, anyway).
Watch "Close-Up" on your own and come ready to chat about it. As of this writing, it's available on the Criterion Channel, and you can rent it through the usual channels: Close-Up streaming: where to watch movie online?
We'll meet at Pryes Brewing, which has lots of space and isn't very noisy. It's near downtown Minneapolis but has plenty of parking. I'll get there around 6:30 p.m. and claim a table on the opposite side of the bar. Get a drink and then head to the other end of the building, to one of the long tables near the risers. It's quietest there and there will hopefully be a long table free (though we might have to move around at least once to find enough space). You'll be able to identify me by my black baseball cap that says "Weird Movie Club" on it.
And feel free to sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. You can go by the official list from the website 366 Weird Movies (366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets) or suggest something else.

"I Love Boosters'" Screening and Discussion: Buy Your Own Ticket
Место еще не указаноLet's try seeing a first-run movie in its opening weekend. "I Love Boosters" is Boots Riley's follow-up to the weird movie all-timer "Sorry to Bother You." Advanced praise notes that it's quite weird in a great way.
It's too early at this writing to know where and when "I Love Boosters" will be showing, but I bet it will be at the Main Cinema and/or my personal favorite theater, Alamo Drafthouse. As plans develop, I'll send emails through Meetup to the people who RSVP. No matter what, you will have to go online and buy your own ticket.
After the showing, you can stay with us and discuss the movie for an hour or so if you like. Alamo Drafthouse has its own bar, and there are several bars near the Main to choose from.
And feel free to sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. It would be great if you wanted to host and lead discussion too. You can go by the official list from the website 366 Weird Movies (366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets) or suggest something else.

"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" Screening and Discussion: Buy Your Own Ticket
Heights Theater, 3951 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN, USLet's go the Heights Theater, a big, fun Columbia Heights theater with its own organ, to see "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." You will need to buy your own ticket online. Do it soon, as the show could sell out. Tickets are $20, but that includes the live organ playing throughout the movie: The Heights Theater
After the showing, we will walk over to Rail Werks Brewing Depot for the discussion. It shouldn't be too crowded or noisy there at 1 pm on a Sunday.
