Threads / Re: RE: [web-59] .net developer

Hello - Bob had sent his email 2 days ago but it was stuck until tonight.  And AJ replied while I was preparing this response...

I didn't see what person from Michigan was being referenced, but in general, I prefer to keep inter-personal conversation away from time-wasting flame-type threads about specific people.  Also, FYI, someone who I saw at an event last night said he only saw my email about how to unsubscribe, as he's not on the list.

Bob from JobMatchbox gave lots of nice references to places to post info, and there are a few more but that is for another thread.  My hunch is also that people post here because each person has a visible profile - and this is different than some other places.  I know of laid-off members who are actively looking, and others who found work through people in this group.

My goal is not to pattern on another group, but several people had said that we should have a free open-flowing mailing list, and pointed to the NY group as an example.  Perhaps they are well-behaved in NY as the group organizer was one of meetup's founders.

NY Tech meetup election was held few months ago when the organizer Scott (meetup.com co-founder) held an election as he stepped down.  Here's how they voted - 630 people out of about 8,000 members: http://www.meetup.com/ny-tech/polls/162043/.  We're always asking for input on organizing events, which is a way to have organizers start getting involed.  I've also helped advise members who've started other meetup groups.

Speaking of new groups, Richard Harrington started a meetup group this week "New Media For New Government" - http://www.meetup.com/newgov/.  I attended one of his podcasting meetup events last year and it was very well-run.

Now I'm back to working on video shot tonight of Kady's interview with the Ahn Trio during a lecture tonight.  She's volunteered pro bono to show them how social media & conversations about their classical music might help their fans better interact with them.  Their concert tomorrow night is at Strathmore (I'm going - use the 30% discount source code "1148" as it works for many Strathmore events).  I'll send a list of events & articles I've found another time to the full group, but in the meantime check www.DCTechEvents.com for local events, and www.somewhatFRANK.com/web-tech-conferences.html for stuff national & worldwide.

I never reply to list-serv groups, and I?m sorry- but I think in this market we should do everything we can to support each other as much as possible. If I have to put up with a spammy list, but it means that someone among us is getting/ giving work- then so be it.

I?ll gripe about topicality once the economy turns around.

Hi All,

This conversation about who to go to is fantastic, but there are a few things that I would like to point out.  If I offend anyone by replying to all, please accept my apology in advance.

1. The only person who complained is someone from Michigan, not even from DC.  If they drop from the list who cares.  If others are unhappy they should speak up.

2.  If someone is looking for someone to do web work, this is the wrong group to ask for help in.  While there are people here who might be able to make recommendations, Refresh DC (http://www.refresh-dc.org) is the place for that sort of ask.  Anyone in that group will be able to make recommendations ? either in person or in their discussion forums.  Craigslist and Jobmatchbox.com are also good places to post a help wanted listing.  Baltimore also has a chapter, Refresh BMore (http://www.RefreshBmore.org).  Someone looking for help with something more specific?  Try Web Content Mavens, DC Web Women, or one of many DC/VA/MD user groups.  All of these groups have one thing in common, they share their event details on DC Tech Events (http://www.dctechevents.com) so they are easy to find.

3. While Paul?s goal may be to pattern this on other people?s groups, including the NY Tech meetup, I would point out that that doesn?t mean that people have to discuss all things in one list.  Try to be too much to too many people and you will be nothing much to anyone.  I would also point out that the NY Tech meetup holds elections, this group doesn?t.

Bob
