Hej All!

Great idea, thanks Joel :-) Looks like we'll all be scattered about, but at least fun is guaranteed! We'll be having a picnic at the R?lambshovsparken bonfire. Anyone who wants to join, contact me.

Cheers!

Announcing a (possible) new meeting for The Stockholm Expat Meetup Group!

What: Picnic with the Valborg's Eve Bonfires

When: Wednesday, April 30, 7:00 PM

Where: (A location for this meeting hasn't been chosen yet)

Who should come: Anyone who wants to celebrate Valborg!

Why: Because you probably have the afternoon off anyway! (or at least, everyone else where you work will take the afternoon off)

Meeting Description: As most of you probably know, tomorrow is a Swedish holiday, Valborgsafton, which is when the dead and the "chaotic spirits" walk on the earth briefly, so we burn bonfires to keep them at bay. It's very short notice so I wasn't planning to rally up a real Meetup event unless there is some interest among you. I'll just start by giving the scoop on where you can find these bonfires in Central Stockholm, so at least you can explore on your own:

Bellevuepark, Vasastan (past the north end of Sveav?gen, next to Brunnsviken). Bonfire starts at 19.30.
Hjorthagens IP, ?stermalm (I don't actually know where that is). Bonfire starts at 19.00.
Vasaparken, Vasastan (T-Bana S:t Eriksplan). Bonfire starts at 20.15.
R?lambshovsparken, Kungsholmen (T-Bana Fridhemsplan or Bus #4 V?sterbroplan). Celebrations from 18.00.
L?ngholmens folkh?gskola, L?ngholmen (T-Bana Hornstull). Bonfire starts at 20.00.
Skansen, Djurg?rden (Trolley, Djurg?rd-ferry, or Bus 44/47). The biggest celebration is here, starting 14.30. Bonfire starts at 21.00.
Riddarholmen (T-Bana Gamla Stan). Parade from Stortorget 20.15, bonfire starts at 20.30.

If anyone is interested in meeting up, post something on here saying so and saying which bonfire you would prefer to gather at. Note: another idea is to meet at the steps of Stadshuset (City Hall), where there should be a good view of the bonfire at Riddarholmen, and possibly others as well. If there's enough interest, then by Wednesday noon I'll post an update here with a specific place to meet.

Recommended to bring:

Picnic Blankets - to sit on and/or to cover with as it gets dark (remember, the nights are still cold!)
Picnicking foods - as you like!
Drinks - Systembolaget is open on Valborgs Eve as on any other Wednesday, mostly until 18.00 and possibly later at some stores.
