Welcome to our World Cultures series! Bangkok is home to people from many different countries, and we'd love to create a welcoming space where anyone can come together to share, learn, and appreciate the cultures and traditions that make our world so beautifully diverse.

What Is It About?
This Loy Krathong, we invite you to join us in celebrating one of Thailand's most beloved festivals! Traditionally, people gather near rivers, canals, and ponds to float beautifully decorated krathongs made from natural materials such as banana tree trunks and leaves, often adorned with flowers, incense, and candles. For many, it's a time to let go of things they'd like to leave behind, express gratitude, and make wishes for the future.

In recent years, cities like Bangkok strongly encourage "One Krathong Per Family" to cut down on waste. For this event, we'd like to come together to create one beautiful community krathong rather than making many individual ones. Everyone can contribute to our shared creation, making it a chance to experience Thai culture, enjoy a hands-on activity, and celebrate the spirit of togetherness!

☞ Did You Know? ☜
Loy Krathong is celebrated on the full moon of the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar. The word Loy means "to float," while Krathong refers to the decorated vessel that people traditionally float on the water. Historically, ancient Thai communities settled along rivers and canals, relying on waterways for drinking water, farming, fishing, and transportation. At the end of the rainy season, when rivers were full and harvest season began, people gathered along the water to offer respect, gratitude and apologize to Phra Mae Khongkha (the River Goddess) for overusing or polluting the water throughout the year. Over centuries, this custom evolved into a cherished cultural ritual of spiritual renewal, symbolized by lighting candles and incense to float away past mistakes or bad fortune while making wishes for health, prosperity, and peace.
