What we’re about
Hi - welcome to our Little Bangkok Sangha.
Upcoming events (2)
See all- Phra Pandit: Joy or Danger of the 'Opt-out' cultureมูลนิธิบ้านอารีย์ (Baan Aree Foundation), Khet Phaya Thai
'ALEXANDER AND DIOGENES' : look up this debate. It frames the question of what is better, ambition and goals, or 'opt-ing out'.
In Japan today many people prefer to opt out - out of love and relationships, marriage, buying property, and engaging with society. In Britain too, fewer and fewer young people drink alcohol (I, and everyone I knew, was straight into the pub as soon as I was old enough), and even in Bangkok, most under 30s report being single. Has an affluent society resulted in a lack of drive?
And is this 'spiritual' - Buddhism is all about 'letting go', and 'letting be'
Is a bit of drive and ambition a good thing for a meditator?Speaker:
Venerable Pandit has been an ordained Buddhist monk in Thailand since 1996. He has a degree in Psychology and a MA in Buddhist Studies. His focus is on early Buddhist teachings, enlightenment traditions, story and fairy tales, and psychology - all from the perspective of a real meditation practice. Expect clear and precise delivery, and a little humour!Inviting:

Enter through the passage between EXIM building and the gas station. (Baan Aree is also the home of Kid Mai Death Awareness Cafe - so you can also follow directions for that on G Maps)As is usual with Buddhist teachings, there is no charge for this event. However, the Little Bangkok Sangha follows the Buddhist custom of Dana (generosity). The teachings and the venue are offered as an act of generosity, and those receiving them can, if they wish, reciprocate by making donations. These go towards the teacher’s and venue's costs. Boxes for Dana will be provided.
Programme:
• 6:00 Baan Aree opens
• 6:30 pm group meditation
• 7:00 pm Dhamma talk
• 8:00 pm (ish) finish - PHRA PANDIT: The Kalama Sutta - 'Do not believe anything' !?!?มูลนิธิบ้านอารีย์ (Baan Aree Foundation), Khet Phaya Thai
'THE KALAMA SUTTA' : This is one of the best known short teachings of the Buddha, where he advised his audience to not believe anyone. Of course, this is mis-taken by casual modern wannabe meditators to mean 'believe what you want'.
I think every meditator should be familiar with what this short text actually says and what it means. You can find the original, actual Pali text in translation over on Sutta Central here.
