Memento mori — "remember that you will die."

Modern life in much of the world is extraordinarily good at helping us not think about death. We've medicalized it, institutionalized it, and outsourced it to hospitals and funeral homes so that people in much of the developed world can reach middle age without ever being in the same room as a corpse.

But not long ago, and even still in a lot of cultures, death happened at home, in community, witnessed. Now it happens somewhere else, to someone else, until suddenly it doesn't. And neither science nor religion can give us a complete and confident answer on what death is.

Meanwhile, we often carry grief we barely have language for, especially those of us living far from home.

For this week's Questions That Matter we’ll be potentially using prompts and questions around ideas such as:

• Why is it so difficult to talk about death with the people we love most and what would we gain from openly discussing it with our loved ones?

• When someone dies on the other side of the world, you can’t be there, and life here continues like nothing happened, how do we handle that?

• One familiar model says mourning is something to move through, toward closure. Another says you never close it, but that you must carry your dead and tend that bond on purpose. Which of these fits your own experience of losing someone?

As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.

Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.

Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.

If possible, please support the venue, 4seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack. They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.

See you on Wednesday.
