Identity Costumes: Who Are You This Time? (Free Weds Night Discussion Group)
Details
For most of human history identities were strictly ascribed to us by family, lineage, or geography. Today (especially in transient hubs like Chiang Mai) we seemingly have the unprecedented freedom to curate our own avatars. Yet, like all supposed newfound freedoms this also can introduce modern anxieties. And to soothe those anxieties, we often talk about "finding ourselves" as if identity is a fixed object buried in the psyche, waiting to be unearthed. But in practice, identity seems to operate much more like a wardrobe. Rather than uncovering a singular true self, some of us adapt by slipping into roles, affiliations, and belief systems depending on the room we’re standing in.
That adaptability comes with a cost though, as friction often arises when these costumes eventually start to wear on us. An adopted identity frequently demands a toll, requiring us to define ourselves by what we oppose, to defend our group even when the criticism is valid, and to meticulously manage the insecurities we hope the costume hides.
So this Wednesday we're asking: What different identities have we worn across our lives, and what have they actually done for us? Is there a core "you" underneath all of them, or is identity adoption just what humans do, forever?
Some additional questions and prompts we may use for the night are:
1. How much of the identity you project is designed specifically to mitigate the insecurities you hope no one notices?
2. When a specific identity you hold begins paying dividends—rewarding you with high social status, followers, or literal income—how long before the authentic self disappears?
3. How do people actually leave an identity such as religion, political movement, nationality, career, sobriety, a marriage? What does it cost?
As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.
Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.
Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
If possible, please support the venue, 4seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack. They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.
See you on Wednesday.
