Nerd Shit: The Art of Uncool Passions

Bob Ross taught a generation that mistakes can become happy little trees. A ten-minute stand-up set can say more about race than a semester of sociology. Naruto taught kids about loneliness, and a comic book taught them that great power comes with great responsibility. Some of the most important things we know came from places nobody would ever put on a syllabus.

Tonight’s Questions That Matter is about the cartoons, comedies, and hobbies we obsess over—and who among us gets to decide what counts as "serious." Why is a novel treated as literature while manga defaults to "just a hobby"? And why is a documentary considered education while a sitcom is wasted time?

We’ll also be playing with the excuses we make for our own joy. Saying "I actually learned so much from it" is often how we justify a weekend of binge-watching or gaming in a culture that hates wasted time. Yet not everything that moves us needs to teach us a lesson. Sometimes fun… is just fun.

Tonight, we want to hear about your favorite ways to geek out, the passions you refuse to apologize for, and the things you were told to "turn off" that ended up teaching you what actually matters.

As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.

Between 40 and 60 people usually join us each week at Questions That Matter, and when we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.

Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.

Our nights are always free of charge. If you can, please support the venue, 4Seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack.

See you on Wednesday.
