About us
This group is operated by Appalachian Mountain Club New York-North Jersey Chapter (7/1/22)
The New York-North Jersey Chapter of AMC was the first chapter formed by the club back in 1912. For over 100 years the NYNJ chapter has been protecting the precious natural resources of our region, providing skills and leadership training, and hosting 100's of outdoor activities every year for the public through our professional and dedicated volunteer trip leaders.
Beginner or expert the AMC NYNJ chapter has something for everyone. With activities that include hiking, biking, paddling, backpacking, skiing, climbing, and more we're sure you will find something you love. And since we know living in and around the NYC area can be difficult without a car, many of our activities are accessible through public transportation.
Beyond just the trips, training, and conservation advocacy we are a group that encourages community and camaraderie among it's members. Open and welcoming to anyone with an interest in the outdoors we hope that the shared knowledge and experiences between all of us will help you to grow within the outdoor community and create connections and friendships for a lifetime.
What sets us apart the other Meetup groups?
• Professionally trained volunteer leaders means our trips are well organized, safe AND fun!
• Easy access on public transportation to many of our activities.
• Activities are open to anyone, no membership dues are required, but your support helps.
• Your support helps us continue to protect more than 100,000 acres of land and 2,000 miles of trails under the care of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
• Beyond our volunteer led activities AMC provides opportunities for tens of thousands of youth to experience the outdoors each year through our Youth Opportunities Program.
While this Meetup Group showcases some of our best activities they don't all make it to this page and often you will only see a small fraction of what is available! If you would like to see the full assortment of upcoming activities offered by the NYNJ chapter please click here.

Wanaque Ridge - Welcome to Spring! (Moderate)
Wanaque, NJ, USJoin leader on his backyard hike on rarely used trails in northern NJ. This hike has it all and is an excellent return on energy expended. Modest initial climb (450') rewarded by a magnificent ridge and Wanaque reservoir views. We will continue to Van Slyke castle where the spring flowers are starting to bloom and then return via Ramapo Lake. Fit beginners are welcomed and encouraged but please check with the leader to see if this hike is appropriate for you and you are properly equipped. Be prepared for 7.5 miles/900' in 4 hours of hiking time on rocky trails with stream crossings. If you think you may need poles, you do.
Level will be at the upper end of moderate (2C+ on the old AMC scale).
For those who may be short of time and think they may want to leave early or those who wish to use a map, I highly recommend Avenza (free) with the NY-NJ Northern New Jersey Highlands Combined Maps ($15 or so). AllTrails is great for telling you what to do, but nowhere near as good as Avenza with the TC combined maps for telling you how to do it.
Logistic information (please read before coming)
As always, Leaders In Training and those considering leading are strongly encouraged to contact L.
For drivers, there is plenty of parking!
Please note that Covid-19 persists in our region, with a recent upsurge in the number of cases. Out of consideration to fellow hikers, do not join this hike if symptomatic of Covid-19 or infected with it.

New to the Appalachian Mountain Club? Looking to meet others who love the outdoors? Deepen your connection to the outdoors every month with new AMC friends!
Today, we venture to one of the most storied Cherry Blossom groves, located in Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ. This park is the first county park in the country and designed by the Olmsted Brothers, of Central Park fame. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Place. More importantly, it boasts the largest collection of Japanese flowering cherry trees in the U.S., a beautiful signal to springtime! After immersing ourselves in the floral fireworks, we'll walk around and explore a section of this historic park.
Meet at 11:00 AM at Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. From NYC, take NJ Transit or the PATH to Newark Penn Station. Then take the Newark Light Rail (towards Grove Street or Branch Brook Park) and exit at Davenport Ave or Park Ave Stations. For drivers, the primary parking lot is located at the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center (accessible via Mill Street or Lake Street).
Bring water, lunch/snacks, weather-appropriate clothes, your smartphone or camera, sturdy footwear, and a positive attitude! No dogs are permitted on this walk.
