The New York Chapter of the Service Design Network, historically called the NYC Service Design Collective, is a non profit run entirely by volunteers that aims to strengthen and grow the Service Design community within New York. Ultimately we hope to make Service Design more accessible as a discipline and methodology. We run monthly events to bring together SD professionals, academics, and enthusiasts. All levels welcome.
To review previous event photos, recordings and recap articles take a look at our website https://sdnnyc.com/ and check out the Community section.
The Service Design Network is a global network of Service Design professionals with chapters like us across the world. SDN manifesto: Service Design is crucial for all private and public organizations that want to innovate and improve their service strategies, offerings and the user experiences. The Service Design Network (SDN) is the platform to connect you with like-minded passionate service designers from companies, agencies and universities, and with curious innovators who embrace and apply this approach for the better of their organizations and for people.

Talk & Discussion: Stories That Stick: Using Narratives to Make Design LandEvent Description
In this talk, we’re not diving into new tools. Instead, we’re shining a light on something powerful that we already have at our disposal: scenario narratives. These can be stories about the issues we're facing now (like a current-state narrative, also called a service narrative) or visions of what our future could look like (a future-state narrative). These aren’t just fun storytelling exercises; they’re tools that can really drive change. When used thoughtfully, scenario narratives can simplify complex ideas, reveal hidden assumptions, and inspire even the most senior stakeholders to take action. They work because they tap into something data alone often can't do: they create connections, evoke emotions, and make our ideas feel real. Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication across cultures, and scenario narratives borrow that same power. They use relatable, down-to-earth stories to ignite empathy, allowing stakeholders to not just understand the user experience but actually feel it.The purpose of narratives in design isn’t to entertain. They are meant to bring real user needs to the forefront, clarify choices and unlock stuck conversations.
During this session, you’ll hear real stories about how narratives have helped stakeholders really "get it," leading teams to gain support, and build momentum for solutions that look ahead. No new templates, no fancy tools, just a reminder to make intentional use of what we already know.Agenda
