Meteor Shower - Quadrantids - Dec. 26 to Jan. 16 2026 - Personal Activity
Meteor Shower - Quadrantids - Dec. 26 to Jan. 16 2026 - Personal Activity
You do not need to sign up for this event. It is a placeholder only. This is a personal challenge activity. If you have questions, need help, or want to organize with other members feel free to post comments below. The American Meteor Society has this to say... The Quadrantids have the potential to be the strongest shower of the year but usually fall short due to the short length of maximum activity (6 hours) and the poor weather experienced during early January. The average hourly rates one can expect under dark skies is 25. These meteors usually lack persistent trains but often produce bright fireballs. Due to the high northerly declination (celestial latitude) these meteors are not well seen from the southern hemisphere. Predictions for 2026 show a peak near 00:36 UT on January 4th. This timing favors Asia..Activity will be severely compromised in 2026 as a full moon occurs on January 3rd. **Shower details** - **[Radiant](https://www.imo.net/resources/glossary/#Radiant):** 15:20 +49.7° - **[ZHR](https://www.imo.net/resources/glossary/#ZHR):** 120 - **Velocity:** 25 miles/sec (medium - 40.4km/sec) - **Parent Object:** 2003 EH (Asteroid) **Next Peak** \- The Quadrantids will next peak on the Jan 3\-4\, 2026 night\. On this night\, the moon will be 100% full\. AMS Meteor Shower Calendar -- https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/ Nature Nerds of Austin has this to say... "Where is a good place to see the meteor shower?" Good question, the darker the better. For the Austin area going either E or W will provide darker skies. I'd suggest looking at a light pollution map to help focus on areas as well. https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/ https://darksitefinder.com/ https://www.cleardarksky.com/maps/lp/large_light_pollution_map.html https://djlorenz.github.io/astronomy/lp2006/overlay/dark.html https://www.darkskymap.com/ Because meteor showers are pieces of rock and dust on an orbit that intersects Earth's orbit at some point in time and space the best time to pick as the middle of your observing window is 2am local. This is because of the way the sun, the earth, and the meteor shower interact. From sundown to 2am the light gets progressively darker and after 2am it gets progressively lighter until you hit sunrise. You'll want a good low sitting chair that has a lot of lean back. You basically want to lay back and just stare at the sky unfocused until you see an event. They can last from very short blips to long streaks lasting several seconds. If you're lucky you'll see an air burst where a large bolide comes apart in a shower, they are extremely rare. The best binoculars to use for stargazing are 25x70 but smaller ones will work. Larger ones have too much magnification and there is a lot of jitter just from your natural body motion so the image is not stable. Binoculars are not a lot of use for meteor showers. The two best places to get basic information are IMO and AMS. IMO Shower Calendar -- https://www.imo.net/resources/calendar/ AMS Shower Calendar -- https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/ Austin Astronomical Society (AAS) - They have many activities through the year. Consider becoming a member. -- https://austinastro.org/ You should also use Stellarium to help map out the date/time/and sky position of the expected source of the shower for a given date. BE ADVISED meteor showers are EXTREMELY UNPREDICTABLE. So don't expect to go out there and see something in the first 15 minutes. You could be out there all night and not see anything. Other nights you may get lucky and see a shower that has a high rate. Stellarium has the ability to turn the screen red so you can keep it live if you have a laptop at your observing site. 6.6-mile Brushy Creek Regional Trail Evening Hike @ Cedar Park [🔦 Recommended!]
6.6-mile Brushy Creek Regional Trail Evening Hike @ Cedar Park [🔦 Recommended!]
Join us for our **recurring** scenic **6.6-mile (10.6-km)** evening at the Brushy Creek Regional Trail in Cedar Park! We’ll take a relaxed pace through one of the city’s most beautiful trails. The hike should take about **2 hours**. **ℹ️ Additional info** The purpose of this specific event is to have a recurring way for us to meet relatively easily. I want to make sure that recurring events are a "low effort" commitment, ie you don't have to drive 2 hours to get there. In the future once we have more organizers I plan to have more recurring events scheduled so we can cover a larger area. Also, you may have noticed that **this event has an RSVP limit**. This is done for multiple reasons. Not only to ensure that a large group is not disruptive to the rest of the Austin community on the trail, but also to allow us to prioritize the "meetup" experience for every attendee, as having +60 people may be overwhelming, and ultimately the goal of this group is to build a community, not just a collection of individuals that like a specific trail. **📍 Where to Meet** 2310 Brushy Creek Rd, Cedar Park, TX 78613 Google Maps **exact meeting spot link**: https://maps.app.goo.gl/79KfLDsggDVKNfhy8 Route on **AllTrails**: [Will be added in the future] **🅿️ Parking** Parking is available directly at the parking lot close to where we'll meet. There will be enough space for everyone. **ℹ️ Recommendations** * Bring good shoes (Although the terrain isn't challenging and relatively flat) * Pack some water (More than you need, just in case) * Bring a friend! (That's my attempt at a shameless self-promo for the group. Although even if you don't, I am confident that you'll get along great with the people you'll meet at the event!) * A flashlight! Your phone is better than nothing, but a dedicated flashlight would only be of benefit of you as the sun sets! **👍 Good to know** * 🐶 Dog-friendly * 👨‍👩‍👧 Family-friendly * ♿ Wheelchair accessible **Event Etiquette (Important!)** * If you RSVP'd, but are unable to make it, please update your attendance as soon as possible. The attendance limit prevents new people from joining if we're at capacity otherwise. If we notice a pattern of you RSVPing to events and not showing up, you will be kicked from this group. * Please show up on time. We will start right at the indicated event time. This is to respect everyones time. If you're a few minutes late, it should not be an issue as the "intro" to the event may take 15 minutes or so, but we will not delay the start until you get there. * Other than that, I know all of you will help me make this group great for everyone. So thanks in advance for that! **Event itinerary** Below is the general outline of how the events are going to function * Updates since last event * Official introductions of everyone * Icebreaker question * The event itself * After event: * (As needed) Updates for next event(s) * Exchange goodbyes **🙂 I want your feedback!** I am working on making this description as informative as possible, if anything is missing, you have any recommendations or there are errors/mistakes, please reach out to me, thanks!

Lake Georgetown - 11-Mile Hike & Optional Campout - Cedar Breaks to Tejas Camp
**Lake Georgetown - 11-Mile Hike & Optional Campout - Cedar Breaks to Tejas Camp** The weather looks great this weekend - ideal for another long hike and campout at Lake Georgetown. Start 2026 with an easy 11-mile hike from Cedar Breaks Trailhead to Tejas Park Campground. This is an ideal hike for beginning backpackers or even those who are curiously interested in backpacking and camping. If you just want to do an 11-mile day hike, that's okay for this event. I have the Group Site reserved at Camp Tejas for those who want to camp - it will be a great evening for a campfire. We will meet at 9am on Saturday, 1/3/26, at the Camp Tejas parking lot. We'll need a few willing volunteers to carpool everyone to the starting point at Cedar Breaks trailhead. (Cars left at Cedar Breaks will need to pay for one daily use pass ( https://www.recreation.gov/activitypass/d589d86b-7acd-11eb-aa53-7a66f0569cfb/order ). We should get everyone shuttled to the Cedar Breaks trailhead and be ready to hike by 10am. Everyone should bring their own sack lunch and water. Campers will need to bring their own dinner meal for the campout. After the 11-mile hike from Cedar Breaks to Camp Tejas, someone with a car at Tejas will shuttle people back to their cars that were left at Cedar Breaks. Please feel free to PM me if you have questions/concerns. \-\-\- Legal Disclaimer \-\-\- By clicking on "Yes" for this event you agree, warrant, and covenant as follows: In consideration for accepting this entry, I, the registrant, intending to be legally bound, hereby, for myself, my heirs, my executors and administrators, do waive and release any and all rights for damages I may have against any parties or persons connected with the Austin Weekend Hiking & Backpacking Club Meetup group for and related to the above listed event. Leave the Past Behind, Burning Bowl Ceremony at Unity of Columbus
Leave the Past Behind, Burning Bowl Ceremony at Unity of Columbus
As we prepare to enter a new year, the Burning Bowl Ceremony offers a powerful and heartfelt opportunity to let go of what no longer serves us and make space for new beginnings. You are warmly invited to join us for this sacred and reflective ritual. The Burning Bowl Ceremony is a beloved Unity tradition—an empowering moment where we release old patterns, worries, or limiting beliefs by writing them down and symbolically releasing them into the flame. This act of letting go opens the door to clarity, peace, and transformation.
White Stone Ceremony – A New Name, A New Beginning
White Stone Ceremony – A New Name, A New Beginning
You are invited to participate in one of Unity’s most meaningful and empowering traditions—the **White Stone Ceremony**. As we enter a new year, this sacred ritual gives you the opportunity to listen within, connect with Spirit, and claim a new name or intention for your life. In ancient times, receiving a white stone symbolized freedom, new identity, and fresh possibility. Today, we continue that tradition by holding a smooth white stone, entering a quiet meditation, and allowing Spirit to reveal a word, name, or message that reflects who you are becoming.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Gaye Fifer** **Band: Hot Coffee Breakdown** **Big Scioty Contra Dance** **temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
