*Once a month, the ‘Film ab!’ film forum takes place in our Mediothek. As part of this event, we screen works by Berlin-based film students and filmmakers who explore various socio-political issues through a range of audiovisual formats. Following the screening, language students at the Goethe-Institut, as well as interested external guests, have the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers themselves, ask questions and engage in discussion.* In the sixth event of our series “Film ab!” at Goethe-Institut Berlin, we will focus on the short film *She Was* (2024) by Abril Andrea Arnauda Appel. Following the screening, the audience will have the wonderful opportunity to engage in a discussion with the director. The short film is multilingual with English subtitles, and the discussion will be held in English. **Content Warning:** This film addresses themes of sexual violence. One day, her body is found in a lake, and everything points to suicide. However, as we delve deeper, we discover that Katty had been gradually adapting: seeking professional help, leaning on her family, building new friendships, and opening herself up to new opportunities. What is initially classified as suicide takes on a completely different dimension upon closer inspection. The short film references the fate of Mexican woman María Fernanda Sánchez Castañeda, who disappeared and died in Berlin in 2023. Two theories surrounding her death sparked debate in both Mexico and Germany – suicide, according to the authorities, and homicide, as claimed by her loved ones. The director aims to present both perspectives, while giving particular attention to the version that is often dismissed due to a lack of evidence or resources. Her studies took her abroad to France, the USA, Belgium, and Canada. She has worked as an Assistant Director in Vancouver and Mexico on both film and corporate productions, and has also shared her passion for filmmaking with young animation students as a film instructor at her former university in Mexico. Abril is a fiction director working across short films, music videos, and advertising, and has experience in multiple areas of filmmaking, including writing, production, and editing. Her work is strongly influenced by her passion for the performing arts, such as dance, singing, and acting. Her recent films explore the themes of trauma, mental health and emotional resilience.

Es ist gemischt, geeint durch das Interesse an Texten. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Abends lesen aus ihren bislang unveröffentlichten Kurzgeschichten, lyrischen Texten, Erzählungen, Romanen, manchmal auch aus Theaterstücken. Die Autoren stellen nicht sich selbst, sondern ihre Texte der Kritik. Wir verstehen uns als Arbeitsbühne. Deshalb wird bei uns nach den Lesungen nicht geklatscht. Die Texte werden nach der Lesung des Autors auf handwerkliche Stärken und Schwächen „abgeklopft“. Es geht im Forum daher nicht um weltanschauliche Debatten. Im Idealfall hat der Autor/die Autorin nach einer Lesung und der Kritik verstanden, wo die Stärken und Schwächen seines Textes liegen, woran es seinem Text noch fehlt, was er ändern sollte und wo er bei seiner Überarbeitung ansetzen kann. Der Abend endet gegen 22.00. Im Anschluss können Sie mit den Autoren im Café der Schwartzschen Villa noch ins Gespräch kommen und manches aus dem Literaturbetrieb erfahren. Wir sind im Kontakt auch mit namhaften Vertretern desselben. Also – nicht gleich verschwinden! Dranbleiben. Reden Sie mit den Forumianern! ## Sie möchten selbst lesen? Wenn Sie selbst im Autorenforum lesen wollen, gibt es einige Dinge zu beachten. Wir bitten Sie sehr herzlich, sich mindestens einmal vor Ihrer ersten Lesung bei uns mit unseren Gegebenheiten vertraut zu machen. Diese Woche sind wir wieder im Süden der Stadt. Auf nach Neukölln in die Weserstr. Dort besuchen wir erstmalig das 19.77. Wir sind gespannt was uns erwartet. **Thema des Abends** Deine Lebensgeschichte \-\-\- **Warum dieses Thema** Jeder Mann trägt eine Geschichte in sich. Die meisten kennen sie, aber die wenigsten haben sie je wirklich ausgesprochen. Nicht so, wie sie wirklich war. Ohne Beschönigung, ohne die Teile wegzulassen, die sich schwer anfühlen. Ich habe selbst erlebt, was passiert, wenn du das tust. Was sich löst, wenn du deine eigene Geschichte nicht mehr nur im Kopf trägst, sondern sie vor anderen Männern aussprichst. \-\-\- **Was dich erwartet** Die meisten Gespräche mit Männern drehen sich um Lösungen, Ergebnisse, oder was als nächstes kommt. Bei diesem Abend nicht. Hier bekommt jeder seinen Raum für das, was er wirklich in sich trägt.. Es ist ein moderierter Raum, in dem Männer zu einem konkreten Thema in echten Austausch kommen sollen. Jeder spricht. Nicht um zu beeindrucken, sondern um sich zu zeigen. Jeder Abend beginnt mit einem kurzen Check-in und einer Einführung ins Thema. Dann bekommt jeder Mann die Möglichkeit, seine eigene Erfahrung zum Thema auszusprechen. Was er erlebt hat. Was er noch nie gesagt hat. Was ihn beschäftigt. Ohne Unterbrechung und ohne Ratschläge. Durch die Scheidung meiner Eltern, bin ich ohne Vater groß geworden und hatte dadurch nie gelernt, wie ich mich als Mann in der heutigen Welt zu verhalten habe.
