Frensham Great Pond is a stunning location, perfect for a summer adventure. This will be primarily a nice and easy approx., 12 km loop walk (with an occasional hill) through a mix of sandy trails, open heathland, and beautiful pondside paths. Along the way, expect peaceful scenery, possible wildlife sightings, and the chance to unwind!
Frensham Great Pond is one of Surrey’s largest medieval man-made ponds, Frensham Great Pond was created in the 13th century on the orders of the Bishop of Winchester — primarily to supply freshwater fish for his estate at nearby Farnham Castle. Fish was a staple of the religious fasting diet, making a controlled fishery a practical necessity for the Church.
The pond was formed by damming natural springs and wetland using earthworks and local ironstone, largely carried out by local tenants fulfilling feudal obligations. Remarkably, the original dam alignment still forms part of the pond today.
Over the centuries its role shifted from fish farming to common grazing land and eventually to the recreational landscape we enjoy today — now managed as a protected heathland site for wildlife conservation, walking, swimming, and sailing.
In other words, a medieval engineered fish farm, built by the Church in the 1200s — and still here, 800 years later.
