Detaylar

Interested in operating systems? Enraptured by Linux or technology? Have an old laptop? want to make that first step into technology? Wondering how to get started as a dev?

Linux is used by everyone from Google, Wikipedia, Github, NASA, CERN, Facebook, Twitter, Docker and many more.

The class

This free hands-on class, by Brian Byrne, maybe just what you needed!

Brian will teach you the methodology of installing Linux, the operating system from scratch.

He will teach you how to rejuvenate any old laptop (pre-Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10).

He will explain operating system theory: why we need operating systems, what they do and how to use them.

Brian will explain partitioning, along with the tricks and traps of installing a new operating system.

This is a free hands-on class, people can work in pairs or teams. If you don’t have an old laptop, but are still interested, just come along for the experience.

Prerequisites (things that should be done before the class)

• Participants should bring along an old, but working, laptop that can be wiped and Linux installed on it.

Nice to have: an external mouse and knowledge of how to boot your laptop from CD/DVDs or USB sticks.

Got a newer laptop?

If you haven't got an old laptop that can be wiped, please do this before the class:

  1. Download and install Oracle's virtual box https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

  2. Download a copy of LXLE 14.04.4 32-bit version from http://www.lxle.net/download

Many thanks to Skills Matter for the venue and light refreshments.
