RE: [webcms-53] Re: FW: Upgrading from Joomla 2.5 to 3.2

Hi John,

I was using two Hosting Service Providers, one here and one in the States, I have since spent a lot on Siteground to get my existing Hosting Service up and running using their Cloud Based Servers. I have about 20 odd customers running on these at the moment and they are all 2.5 or 3.2 sites. We are no longer supporting 1.5 sites and will offer an upgrade as part of the change over for a client if they would still like to host with us.

I can only second what Tim has already said below and that is that siteground are top notch to deal with, 24/7 help and this Is really appreciated when you have done something stupid to your .htaccess file at 3am in the morning and the brain is starting to fog up. They do offer a one site transfer for free to host with them, but I have found this was not so good and probably my only bad comment towards them as I sent a large customer to them and they did not do a clean transfer and then handed it back to the customer to have fixed.

Over all though the best that seems to be out there for Joomla hosting and provides the speed one wants for all websites.

Cheers

Jeff

Hi John,

I would advise against WebCity, they run really old PHP versions on their shared servers (you can’t run Joomla 3), and the support is pretty average. They also attempt to enforce a 50,000 inode limit on unlimited accounts, which is very low in comparison to their competitors, and they also don’t provide any tools to monitor and manage your inode usage – effectively this means that you cannot really host multiple sites on the same account (unless there are a couple of very small ones). The one VPS I used was badly configured and had poor management tools.

Although not hosted in Australia (Singapore is closest data centre), I think SiteGround offer the best value and service for Joomla hosting. We  use SiteGround for joomla.org.au (also used for all the JoomlaDay events in Australia), and Australian JUG members can get a special deal at http://www.siteground.com/australia

As far as Australian based web hosts go, http://ausweb.com.au/ are ok if you have low budget, and http://www.anchor.com.au/ are really good if you have a larger budget. Both are based in Sydney.

Regards

Tim

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your prompt reply - much appreciated!

My research to date indicates that WebCity in Parramatta offer the best deal.

Their Cloud Pro at $12.95/month has unlimited everything.

They've been around since 1979 and have a large client base.

If the NBN gets going I reckon they should be OK.

I now need to build a Joomla 3.x  site and migrate the databases - I don't think there is a practical migration path from J2.5.26.

Thanks again Ian.

Hi John

Hostnetworks are at 8 mile plain

I used them for a long time, although data on plans is not abundant as with most of the better Australian providers ie data is exxy in Australia. However last time I looked they weren't providing vps's; ie only dedicated servers or shared hosting plans.
