Re: [Drum-For-Love] Fee?

WOW....I am shocked that all of this was not listed in your event description.
Food...water...fire dancers....painters...A TRUMPET ?!?!

Is it just me...or is this no longer a drum circle?

It's fine but a little info would have prevented all of this fee angst.

Hello Susan,

The 15 dollar fee includes food and bottled water.  From the $15 fee $5 goes to Alfredo's and $10 goes to Drum For Love.  At each Drum Circle we have two paid performers.  This Sunday we have a talented trumpet player, and fire dancers Sirena Serpentina that are getting paid to perform at our event.   We also include live painters.  Drum For Love is not just a drum circle.....it used to be but it has changed and evolved and will continue to do so.  We have done numerous charity events where my wife and I take time off from work to be able facilitate.  We are independent contractors so if we don't work, we don't get paid.  We have lost thousands of dollars already by just taking a Saturday off here and there within the last year and a half.  We still want to continue to do charity events and having funds set aside to buy instruments for the children and hire performers, etc. is necessary at this point.  Drum For Love has a non-profit mind-set and we are strongly considering filing for 501-C3 status.  We strongly feel that everyone will receive something very valuable that they can take with them when they attend a Drum For Love event.  We value ourselves and we feel  100 percent at ease including a fee at this point.  I understand that there may be a number of members that will not agree with the fee but we are including those by allowing volunteer opportunities at our events.  We have already included a number of consistent members with volunteer opportunities.  We have the intention of expanding Drum For Love to reach out to other communities and also including our consistent followers that have been with us from the beginning.

Much love,
Armando and Yve Hart

OK....I get it....we need money to live.  Just because something has a fee doesn't automatically make it less of a love fest.  But where is the money going and why?

As an organizer myself, with lots of meetup experience, I see many events with a fee.
That's fine but that is usually for a class where you actually have a teacher, or it's for a venue that charges for the event, either food, drink or space.

I have also seen organizers who charge $10, $25 to their members as yearly dues and if everyone paid they would make a profit of thousands !!!

Alfredo's has free movies and popcorn through the summer....they sell food and drink....they are surrounded by free sand.

So what is the $15 fee for?

Satnam, Sorry to say "I will not be able to attend the sessions now that there is a charge". Seems like everyone is struggling with finances at this time so,in reality this is the time to offer these meetings at no charge. I would like to see all musicians donate/Seva their time and put out a possitive vibe through out our communities to help lift spirits of all in crisis. I will go to the free meetings and enjoy the fact that I will be with  all like minded people. I get the fact that everyone is out trying to make money but this group is about exchange of energy, not money..If the location is charging for the meeting then maybe you should look elsewhere? The beach is free! Laguna has a really nice free drumming group! Wahe Guru!  Mahan Kirn Kaur

Hi everybody,

As a community organizer and artist/drummer myself, I would like to gently remind everyone that just because something isn't free doesn't make it any less authentic as a place for expressive arts and music. As you all know, we can go almost anywhere for a free drumming experince- . As someone who has a love of the scene, I am willing to come shell out some cash every now and then. Espeically when I know there are performers who will get paid. The fact is, it's not always about showing up to get what WE want, but also give more than our djembe beat. I accepted a long time ago that I live in a society of money. Because of my experince as an organizer and person who wants attempt to make a living from my art, I knew that my free-love-hippie-anything-that-costmoney-is-commercial-and-therefore-not genuine- way of thinking was something I needed to evolve from. It's something that is more prevalent in these circles, at least in my observation. But the thing is, our scene could be so much more powerful and have more influence if there was more open mindedness about cash. Some of us would love to quit our day jobs and make a living off being a musician, but dang, it would be impossible because everyone thinks that music should be free! If some can't afford it, however, thats another story, but if that is the case, we just have to make sure that we don't allow our dissapointment to become disillusionment about money in general.

I sent my thoughts in a spirit of a desire to share my heart- I hope it will be recieved that way....

I'll be there- and 15$ is a stretch for me, and it will be my first event. I hope to see ya'll there. Because it will make the 15$ I spent all the more valuable.

Warm Regards,

Lady Nemesis
