Re: [ia-55] Best Practices for Alerts

I think this is related to dialog boxes, although there are other types of more contextual alerts where you don't need a dialog box. The dialog box could be a new window or just mimic one like a layer in an Ajax or Flash app. This wikipedia article entry might be helpful:

You need to decide first of all if it's modal or non-modal and developers need this specified. Modal means the user can't continue with anything else until they make a decision regarding the alert, even it if it's just OK/Cancel. Non-modal means they can just close the alert or continue using the application without doing anything regarding the alert.

Consider whether you want any buttons/decisions in the alert to be just Yes/No or Ok/Cancel in a response to being presented with some options or if you want to present those options right on the buttons, such as "Yes, Cancel my account." I prefer the latter.

For more information you could check out Cooper's book "About Face, the Essentials of Interaction Design" Chapter 24: Dialogs and Chapter 25: Errors, Alerts and Confirmation

These are alerts that would take place within an application.  They could be modal windows or other types.  At this point I'm just looking for best practices for a draft of a style guide.

What are some of the guidelines you use when you have to create alerts?
