Events from our Partners - LJC

From: Maggie C.
Sent on: Friday, April 22, 2016, 12:59 PM

Hi guys,

I hope you have been enjoying April and the better weather. It’s good to have the chance of daylight before and after work!

I’m writing with details of some of the events being run by our partners during the next couple of weeks. There are some events listed here that I’m sure you’ll want to get along to yourself, but there are also several that we hope you’ll tell others about, including two coding clubs for kids  (Coder Dojo and Wizzie Wizzie) that happen regularly in London. These are great places for a future generation of programmers to get started and maybe really get into coding, so please let your friends or family with potential coders of the right age know the event details.

I don’t usually pick out specific events to tell you abut, but there are two events coming up very soon that I do need to draw your attention to:
  • We’ve only just heard that Dirk Mahler will have some free conference tickets to give to 3 lucky people at his talk to the LJC on Monday 25th April. The tickets will be for the Graph Connect Conference in London on Tuesday 26th April, so sign up for (and get along to) Dirk’s talk for a chance of winning.
  • If you are one of the LJC members who has been looking forward to the opportunity to learn Java from the experienced developers in the community you’ll be pleased to see that the first session is happening on Thursday. This is another event to tell others about, so please spread the word.
Here’s the full list of events:

25th April

Yes we scan! Software Analysis using jQAssistant

Dirk Mahler, a member of the Saxony JUG, is in London today.  His talk presents the approach behind the open source software analytics tool jQAssistant: which  can be plugged into the build process to allow scanning of relevant structural information like Java packages, classes and Maven descriptors into a Neo4j graph database and applying rules to them.

**Special ticket offer! 3 lucky members of the audience will receive tickets for the Graph Connect Conference in London on 26th April. For your chance to win, make sure you come along to tonight’s event**

30th April

Coder Dojo Whitechapel

CoderDojo Whitechapel is a free coding club for kids. All ages are welcome (our main audience is 5-16 years old).

You will need to bring your own laptop that can be connected to the internet - NOT an iPad - an children must be accompanied by an adult.

Don’t worry if you’ve never coded before, all you will need to do is bring a laptop and have fun. There will be mentors to assist you at every point.

And if you have coded before, then the mentors will be able to take your knowledge to the next level. Bring along your programming or code projects for our special “Show & Tell” session, to share with the other ninjas.

Follow the link for full details and to sign up.

10th May

Java Generics: Past, Present and Future

RSVPs open on Monday for this talk from the Docklands.LJC.

Generics are one of the most complex features of Java. They are often poorly understood and lead to confusing errors. Unfortunately, it won’t get easier. Java 10, release planned for 2018, extends Generics, so it’s time to understand generics or risk being left behind.

Details will be available on the London Java Community home page on 25 April.

The dojos are where they help one another to learn Clojure and provide a chance to code that our day jobs may not allow. They also organise occasional lunches, hack days, reading groups, sprints… For details of what’s coming up, see the calendar

That’s all the event news from me until mid-May when I’ll be back with details of more free events for developers.

Best wishes,

Maggie
