Tell the Story of the Data: How Data Journalists Work and A Hands-on Workshop #I

THIS IS A FREE EVENT - PLEASE FINISH YOUR RSVP IN THE LINK BELOW

https://gdg.community.dev/events/details/google-gdg-cloud-london-presents-tell-the-story-of-the-data-how-data-journalists-work-and-a-hands-on-workshop-iwd21/

Workshop Summary
The pandemic has attracted a great amount of public attention to Data Journalism and Data Visualisation in general. In this workshop, the participants first have the opportunity to understand what data journalism is, how data reporters work and which techniques and practices might be useful for them when working and communicating data. Then, the second part of the workshop will be hands-on. We will use Google's COVID-19 Open Data dataset on BigQuery, analyse and transform the data using SQL or Python pandas, and visualise using Google Cloud Data Studio.
Note: This workshop will use Google technology - Colab, BigQuery and Data Studio - which will require a Google Account. We will ask you to share the email address you use for your Google Account before the workshop, in order to set up the exercise environment for you.
Audience Takeaway

The audience will know and understand the work of a data journalist, the processes and tools used in the media to work with data and will also learn about best practice for data visualisation and how to efficiently communicate the data.
The audience will be able to learn some essential technical skills to analyse, transform and visualise data using popular tools.

Agenda

6:30 PM: Data journalism and its application outside the media

led by Carmen: What data journalism is, how a data journalist works and which practice can be applied to other non-media fields.

7:00 PM: Hands-on workshop- led by Yoyu (60 minutes)

led by Yoyu: the participants will be given an example story, and follow along a Colab Python notebook to analyse data from

Tech Talks - Cloud Migrations & Databases

Online event

THIS IS A FREE EVENT - PLEASE FINISH YOUR RSVP IN THE LINK BELOW

https://gdg.community.dev/events/details/google-gdg-cloud-london-presents-tech-talks-cloud-migrations-databases/

Tech talks focused on cloud technologies.

Agenda

6:30 PM: De-risking migration from mainframe to cloud: Shifting quality to the start of migration projects

As a member of this meetup, you’ve likely already experienced the immense value of cloud-based architecture. ‘The Business’ are now increasingly aware of this value, too, and more are investing in cloud migration. However, there are risks as well, especially when migrating from legacy and mainframe systems.

These legacy systems are often poorly documented blackboxes, built or acquired decades ago. Developers might not want to touch them for fear of damaging business-critical processes, while testers are unsure about how exactly the new system should function. Legacy components are frequently therefore left late in migration projects. Yet, the new system must faithfully reflect the data transforms performed by these complex, interrelated systems. Late failure to migrate mainframe components therefore risks undoing the years of time and effort already invested in cloud migration.

This meetup will explore an approach to iteratively and rigorously testing mainframe migrations to cloud, all while building “living documentation” of the old and new systems. It will discuss how visual data flows build accurate logical pictures of legacy systems, while one flow can generate automated tests for both legacy and new components. This enables iterative snapshot comparisons of the two systems, fixing potentially devastating bugs as they arise and maintaining accurate documentation of both systems. Testers and developers in turn know exactly what needs developing and can test each component as it moves, reliably migrating legacy throughout the project.

7:05 PM: Self Managed Databases vs Managed Databases

7:35 PM: Closing Remarks
