Hey, I want in on your class.  I did not know there was a class on it.  Where?  When?  What time?

Man this is exactly how I feel.  I even have contacts that could get them jobs.  I've told them this.  I'm close to putting out ultimatums but I hate for it to come to that.  I learned ruby before I ever had a job.  I yearned for the knowledge and stayed up until 3 am every night after I got off work.  Maybe I should expand the class more and if I can get some people in who really want to learn it, the ones now will either start taking it more seriously or get left behind.  I'm not even charging for this class.  I'm doing it because I love Ruby and helping people the same way I was helped.

Robby,

I totally understand, I have tried this before, but with very limited success.

You have to really want to do this, sadly, not enough guys do.

I can take you there, show you things, even how to get a gig, but I can't make you or will make you do it.

So I have been running a beginner RoR class up here in Nashville for several months now and right now I just have 2 guys in it because I've kept it pretty low key.  I only don't tell many people about it because its is easier to teach smaller groups in the setting I'm using.  We meet at a quiet pub once a week and I go over what we did last week and then go over the new material.  I started by having them use the Chris Pine Learn to Program book.  After that I had them go through www.rubymonk.com.  We started Rails 3 weeks ago and they have built out a rails app now they are pretty proud of, especially for beginners.   My only problem is keeping them motivated.  I know it is on them but I don't want to feel like I'm wasting my time.  They show up to class but they seem to now only code when they are in the class with me.  So frustrating.  I think the main reason is they don't see themselves in a job anywhere no matter how much they learn.

Yes, I can recommend those too.

But the question is, what do you do once you've learned the material? Such schools often place newbies in jobs. But if you are experienced programmer, you want to get into a Ruby job as a senior dev, with compensation and working conditions to match.

And you don't want to pound the pavement, because it works out better if they come to you

Anyway, that was the thinking behind FiveYearItch.

Quite likely, the "job hub" should just as well be an online school as a F2F user group.

Emerald City does that, but the code being built is from Hartl's RoR tutorial.

It's almost like we need an intermediate meetup for new or inexperienced devs working on a project as Bennett described.

I agree with Sam.  I'm in the same position, and also coming from professional Java development.  I like the idea of being able to work with a team of new comers to ruby, push the code to github, and then get feedback from more experienced mentors.  Maybe the meetup isn't the place for this as some people have said, but maybe there is another outlet for this like the Nerd Club that meets every so often?  Or some other "break out" type of meeting?

I thought the Emerald City submeetup is fulfilling that role?
