An act of love that fails is just as much a part of the divine life as an act of love that succeeds, for love is measured by fullness, not by reception."
~Harold Loukes~

Hi Earthsaver,

Here?s all the latest info from Earthsave Baltimore. We are a completely volunteer operated nonprofit that helps people make healthier, earth friendly food choices. July, ?09, marks our twelfth year of operations in Baltimore as a chapter of Earthsave International. We hope that you will take advantage of the learning opportunities we offer each month.

As you probably know, making diet and lifestyle changes can be tough. We see it as similar to changing one?s religion. Getting together with folks who are working on the same kind of changes is probably the most powerful thing we can do to help ourselves and others move forward.

Hope that you were able to attend last month?s film showing of Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in Thirty Days. That inspiring and well produced documentary graphically demonstrates the healing powers of a raw food, vegan diet.

We have two more terrific health-related dinner presentations lined up! The July 25th dinner will feature a talk on preventing and reversing osteoporosis, by biomedical researcher Dr. Steven Acocella, who will show us the evidence that consuming cow?s milk and other dairy products actually contributes to osteoporosis. Wow! What a far cry that is from what we were all taught as children! Hope you will be there! Please RSVP!

Our August presentation is one that we think you will especially enjoy! One of our favorite speakers, Michael Greger, MD, will educate and entertain us with his new presentation for 2009 on ?The Latest in Human Nutrition?. Make sure you RSVP for that one!

We are also excited to announce that our September dinner series event will not be our usual potluck, but will be a special event at the Yabba Pot Caf?, Baltimore?s Best vegan restaurant, and will feature a talk by author Ben Shaberman, who will share some essays and humorous experiences from his book, The Vegan Monologues.

You might also like to check out some recent additions the Earthsave Baltimore webpage. We have added several interesting new articles, a listing of local nutrition and medical professionals, and a listing of some other helpful resources for info on the vegetarian lifestyle, animal advocacy, and animal sanctuaries.

The Baltimore Vegetarian and Baltimore Vegan Meetup discussion groups continue to attract real nice turnouts. Meetings are held in restaurants in Towson at Kathmandu Kitchen, and in Pikesville at Mr. Chan?s. Please join us when you can for some great conversation and wonderful food!

Thanks so much! Be well! Hope to see you soon!

Peace, Don Robertson

NEXT MONTH: Saturday, Aug. 29th, 6-9 pm: Earthsave will host a Vegetarian Potluck & Live Presentation of ?The Latest News in Human Nutrition, 2009.? Dr. Michael Greger has scoured the world's scholarly literature on clinical nutrition and developed this brand-new talk of the latest in cutting-edge research. Focusing on recently published, peer-reviewed studies, Dr. Greger will offer practical advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent, treat, and even reverse chronic disease. People will enjoy the quiz show format of this highly engaging presentation. Please join us!

Dr. Greger is a general practitioner specializing in clinical nutrition. He serves as Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture with the Humane Society of the U.S. He was invited to testify as an expert witness in the huge lawsuit filed against Oprah Winfrey by the Texas Beef Cattlemen's Association. FOOD INC. AT CHARLES THEATRE: Documentary filmmaker Robert Kenner uses reports by "Fast Food Nation" author Eric Schlosser and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" author Michael Pollan as a springboard to exploring where the food we purchase at the grocery store really comes from, and what it means for the health of future generations. By exposing the comfortable relationships between business and government, Kenner gradually shines light on the dark underbelly of the American food industry. The USDA and FDA are supposed to protect the public, so why is it that both government regulatory agencies have been complicit in allowing corporations to put profit ahead of consumer health, the American farmer, worker safety, and even the environment? As chicken breasts get bigger and tomatoes are genetically engineered not to go bad, 73,000 Americans fall ill from powerful new strains of E. coli every year, obesity levels are skyrocketing, and adult diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Perhaps if the general public knew how corporations use exploited laws and subsidies to create powerful monopolies, the outrage would be enough to make us think more carefully about the food we put into our bodies. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The film will continue showing through Thursday, July 23rd. at the Charles Theatre, 1711 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Call (410) 727-FILM. Prices for matinees are $6 and evening showings are $8. For show times and more movie info, go to http://www.thecharles.com/schedules/now.asp#1487

ADMINISTRATION SEEKS TO RESTRICT ANTIBIOTICS USED IN LIVESTOCK: By GARDINER HARRIS New York Times: Published: July 13, 2009

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration announced Monday that it would seek to ban many routine uses of antibiotics in farm animals in hopes of reducing the spread of dangerous bacteria in humans.
In written testimony to the House Rules Committee, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, principal deputy commissioner of food and drugs, said feeding antibiotics to healthy chickens, pigs and cattle ? done to encourage rapid growth ? should cease. And Dr. Sharfstein said farmers should no longer be able to use antibiotics in animals without the supervision of a veterinarian.

Both practices lead to the development of bacteria that are immune to many treatments, he said. (See http://earthsavebaltimore.org/node/64 to read full article)

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS DIET AND LONGEVITY ARTICLE: The following article appeared in the June/July issue of the National Geographic website at http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/06/live-longer-dan-buettner-text/1

Nine Secrets to a Long Life: The Longevity Experiment
Dan Buettner's search for the fountain of youth: Text by Josh Dean

Dan Buettner knows a little something about longevity. He?s the holder of three separate Guinness World Records for distance biking: a 15,500-mile ride from Alaska to Argentina in 1987, when he was 27; a 12,888-mile journey across the Soviet Union in 1990; and a 12,172-mile jaunt through Africa completed in 1992. But it was research on longevity first published in National Geographic that really established his bona fides on the subject. (To read full article, go to http://earthsavebaltimore.org/node/57)
