Questions from the Meetup Community

  1. “Why have you eliminated tagging of photos? Why don’t you allow inline photos with the event description?”
    • Our Product team makes decisions about new features or updates based on usage, changing technologies, and feedback!
    • If your group used a feature that is no longer available, please consider submitting a request via our Product Feedback form and let us know how this impacts your community.
  2. Why was I unable to switch accounts for this event to my assistant organizer account?”
    • Some organizers create multiple accounts, each registered to a different email address. This can get confusing since there isn’t an easy way to switch accounts – you’d need to keep track of which account you’ve logged in with.
    • If you’re not seeing the organizer tools you’re expecting, check your profile! The latest updates to the site profile will easily highlight the email address of the account you’ve logged in with.
  3. “Are you aware of shadow-bans of some event?”
    • Meetup doesn’t actively suppress events in search results or announcements.
    • If you have not received the RSVPs you typically expect, try boosting engagement by:
      • Using keywords in your event title and description!
      • Scheduling another event within two weeks!
      • Promoting your event in new spaces, IRL or on social media!
    • Plus, our engineers are conducting experiments to improve search results, which are intended to improve event visibility.

Top Q&A Questions and Resources:

  • Is there a way to “unlink” a group from a geographical location?
    • Alex: Due to the design of Meetup, promoting groups to individuals in the local area has been the primary focus. Meetup’s structure, which was established prior to the pandemic, requires selecting a city and local location for your group. This was implemented to accommodate members’ preferences in their profile settings regarding how far they are willing to travel for in-person events.
  • How do we kindly and effectively advertise paid events offered in addition to free events, to encourage participation?
    • Alex: There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to your question. To inform members about the transition to paid events, you can use Meetup’s communication tools like the “contact members” feature or mailing lists. However, encouraging participation requires trial and error. Different events, member familiarity, and willingness to pay vary, so trying different price points for different events is key. By observing RSVPs and attendance, you can refine your approach and find the optimal pricing strategy for your group. Keep learning and adapting based on feedback to achieve success.
    • Colin: Transparency is key when transitioning to paid events. Providing context and reasons behind the decision can help members understand and empathize with the shift. It’s important to be honest with your members about the costs associated with organizing events and maintaining groups. By openly communicating the need to charge for events, you foster a sense of trust and transparency within your community. Members are likely to appreciate your honesty and understand the reasons behind the change. Remember, open dialogue and clear communication can go a long way in building a supportive and understanding community.
