Please join the New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club for our upcoming program on May 19 at 6:30pm with the Director of Conservation Science for Audubon Delta, Erik Johnson, Ph.D.! Note this is a Zoom only event.
Erik will present the talk Birds Need a Carbon-neutral Future – The Pros and Cons of Wind Energy Development in the Gulf of Mexico. Human-induced rapid climate change is predicted to impact all life across the globe, and as such, a shift toward renewable energy is critical to the future of humans and the environment. Both the State of Louisiana and the Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management are moving forward with plans to develop wind energy projects in the northern Gulf of Mexico. For birds, this region is an important migratory flyway, provides critical nesting grounds, and is a non-breeding area for several endangered species. As such, responsible siting and operations is an important consideration to minimize risk to birds. This presentation will discuss these risks in consideration of expanding our renewable energy infrastructure in the southeastern United States.
When: Zoom link will open at 6:30pm, program to begin at 7pm with time for questions after
