Speaker & Talk Information
Christian Bonzelet: How to send a goal notification in real-time to hundred thousands of fans on a Matchday?
No one wants to get notified about a goal minutes after it happened on the pitch. By using the official Bundesliga App, the DFL wants their fans to cheer first.
In this session, DFL will show how Amazon Pinpoint helped to send a massive amount of notifications to a massive amount of fans in real-time. On average, we send out 20.000.000 messages to 625.000 endpoints during a matchday. Before DFL migrated to Amazon Pinpoint, their push notification service was based on Amazon SNS. But they faced several limitations. The audience will learn how to use Amazon Pinpoint for push notifications at scale, what challenges DFL faced while automating the creation of dynamic segments and campaigns for so-called “auto-events” . We will cover how DFL was able to gain insights into campaign performance by using Amazon Pinpoint Eventstreams and Amazon Athena. To answer questions like: “How long does it take to send a goal notification to all fans in a segment?" or "How many notifications are we able to send per second?”. And finally how those insights helped DFL, to challenge themselves along the question: “Do we really have the fastest push notifications?”

About Christian
Hi my name is Christian. I am working as an AWS Solution Architect at DFL Digital Sports GmbH. Based in cologne with my beloved wife and two kids. I am interested in all things around ☁️ (cloud), 👨‍💻 (tech) and 🧠 (AI/ML).
With 10+ years of experience in several roles, I have a lot to talk about and love to share my experiences. I worked as a software developer in several companies in the media and entertainment business, as well as a solution engineer in a consulting company.
I love those challenges to provide high scalable systems for millions of users. And I love to collaborate with lots of people to design systems in front of a whiteboard.
I have used AWS since 2013 where we built a voting system for a big live TV show in Germany. Since then I became a big fan of cloud, AWS and domain driven design.

Niclas Mietz: Let Karpenter manage our nodes!
Are you tired of the complexity of scaling your nodes in Kubernetes Clusters? Scaling with cluster-autoscaler can give an extraordinary complexity when it comes to the use cases that are not directly seeable. What do with Volumes in a different Availability Zone or how can you scale your nodes after prioritization?
Luckily AWS has created a new alternative to the cluster-autoscaler called Karpenter.
In this talk, I’ll give you a first-hands-on look at Karpenter from AWS with different best practices regarding Autoscaling in different use cases.
