Decision Making with Open Data - Bicycle Parking Spots in Paris

We’re the Cologne chapter of CorrelAid, a network of volunteer data enthusiasts using their passion for social good. We team up with non-profit organizations on project-based collaborations – helping them make sense of their data, measure their impact, and tackle real-world challenges.

We believe one of the best ways to prepare ourselves for future projects is to study past projects from the people who created them. The Paris Bicycle Parking Slots project is a perfect example on how to work with open data, spatial data and apply them in public decision making, which is also our focus in Cologne in the upcoming months.

• Partner: Mobility Department of the City of Paris
• Context: Paris planned thousands of new bike parking spots in the city center and wanted to explore whether open data could help identify areas with the highest need.
• Deliverable: An interactive map of Paris split into the smallest administrative units, showing a score for bike parking demand (based on factors like schools, museums, and parks) versus existing parking spots.
• Outcome: Provided the city with an example approach using open data; they later developed their own method internally with more detailed (non-open) data.

We are honored to have Kati, the founding member of the Paris project to walk us through all aspects of it. Kati is from NRW and first joined CorrelAid during her studies in Duisburg. After a PhD in France on online tools for citizen science — where she also co-led the CorrelAid Paris chapter — she now works as a product manager at a legaltech company. She cares about building fair and sustainable digital spaces and, in her free time, enjoys aerial acrobatics and painting.

In addition to Kati's talk we are also honored to have Andreas, a board member of CorrelAid to talk about CorrelAid's direction in building local communities and his expectation on this new CorrelAid Cologne chapter.
