U25 Suicide Prevention | Cologne Green Space Patterns

We’re the Cologne chapter of CorrelAid, a network of volunteer data enthusiasts using their passion for social good. We team up with non-profit organizations on project-based collaborations – helping them make sense of their data, measure their impact, and tackle real-world challenges.

In this third meetup, we continue our journey to learn from existing CorrelAid projects - while kicking off a local project of our own with open spatial data!

1. Project Study: Insights into U25 Online Suicide Prevention

Caritas U25 is a free, anonymous online counselling service aimed at adolescents, and young adults up to age 25 who are in a crisis or have suicidal thoughts. People contact the service through a secured online platform. The counselling is done via email by specially trained peer counsellors (also aged ~16-25).

The goal of our project is to identify patterns in demand and available resources that can help improve the U25 service and serve as a basis for informed political advocacy. This has been challenging because the counseling platform is designed to be completely anonymous. As the project is still ongoing, project team members Yannick, Mareike and Hendrik will focus on sharing their experiences as volunteers and offer you a first-hand look into the work behind U25.

Yannick is part of the U25 project team and a member of the CorrelAid Local Chapter Cologne. He studied psychology and works as a marketing Data Scientist for a German retail company.

2. Project Kickoff: Mapping Cologne’s Green Spaces and Other Urban Patterns

Join us for the kickoff of a CorrelAid Cologne local project! We’ll dive into Sentinel-2 satellite data to explore how we can map Cologne’s green spaces and other urban patterns. This session by Philipp introduces the concept, datasets, and methods – no prior remote sensing experience needed, just curiosity and willingness to learn. The following will be covered:

Philipp is one of our Local Chapter Heads. He is a Data Scientist at IBM based in Cologne, Germany. With an academic background in Applied Data Science he brings expertise in data exploration, data visualization and applied machine learning with a focus on natural language. He is an active member of the CorrelAid community, where he has contributed to projects with CORRECTIV and in safe hands e.v.
