Seefeld (Katzenkopf)

Details

• Distance: 18–24 kilometres
• Grade: Black (difficult)
• Technique: CLASSIC ONLY
• Ski hire: Yes, but why?

This week we're heading to Seefeld to the highest ski trail we can access by public transport in a day – Katzenkopf, at a height of just under 1,400 metres. This is where the good snow is.

Pausing in Seefeld to use the lockers, we then head up C1 and C2 to Wildmoos, before taking C4 up to Katzenkopf. The plan is to have lunch here (see photo). We then tumble back down to Wildmoos, where you can either head straight back to Seefeld (18 km in total), or add in the C3 loop to Neuleutasch before heading back down (24 km).

This route is CLASSIC ONLY as the Katzenkopf trail is not groomed for skating. It is also BLACK almost throughout (and when Seefeld says black, they mean it), so you need to be an experienced skier.

We meet at the absolute very front of the 8.34 train to Garmisch from Platform 27 of Munich Hbf. If you have a Deutschland Ticket buy a return ticket Mittenwald–Scharnitz on the DB or ÖBB app plus a Seefeld Loipen-Tageskarte from here (€14, valid for the train from Scharnitz to Seefeld). If you don't have a Deutschland Ticket, buy a Regio Ticket Werdenfels+Innsbruck (€35). Journey time is a little over 2 hours (one change in Garmisch).
