This group is open to anyone, not just Sierra Club members. There is no charge for trips, other than permit fees (when required). The Miami Group is the local chapter of Sierra Club for Southwest Ohio. Miami Group has a long history of leading various types of outings: Paddling, Hiking, Biking, Backpacking, Camping and Service Outings. All outings are led by leaders who have been certified to meet local and national Sierra Club standards.
Miami Group welcomes participation by the LGBT community, all minority groups, and veterans: Help us broaden the reach of the environmental movement!

Intro to Backpacking Experience - Learn by doing!

Never been backpacking but ready to give it a try? Or maybe it’s just been a few years and you’re looking for a refresher…
This Sierra Club two-night camping experience is intended for those new to backpacking who want to learn by doing in a low-risk setting. Experienced instructors will be on hand every step of the way, and the weekend will include learning sessions covering clothing, shelter, sleep systems, food storage and preparation, water purification and more.
Your adventure begins Friday at the Germantown Sledding Hill / TVT trailhead doing a gear check, plus weighing and fitting packs. We’ll then backpack about 3 miles over gentle terrain to Shimps Hollow primitive campground (potable water and privy available) where participants will pitch their tents, prepare their evening meal and share a campfire. Saturday will include instruction sessions and a day hike through beautiful Germantown MetroPark. After breakfast Sunday we will backpack back to the cars.
Participants must provide their own gear and backpacking meals for two dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches, and physically able to carry their pack the required distance. If you are in need of any gear items, please contact me as there may be some gear loan resources I can share. Sample gear list, food tips, food suggestions and map can be found here.

This book is a sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, always personable account of his thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail, one of the most challenging thru hikes in the U.S.
