The Dublin Book Club Meetup Group Monthly Meetup
The Dublin Book Club Meetup Group Monthly Meetup
Hi there, Here are the books for the April 21st meetup. And remember, you don't have to read both books! Enjoy, and see you on the 21st of April! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCATION HAS MOVED FROM THE BLEEDING HORSE TO JIMMY RABBITTE AT 87 LOWER CAMDEN STREET. Note: If these books are difficult to find in bookshops, try online (e.g.: Amazon.co.uk, kennys.ie, easons.com, bookdepository.com to name a few). AS THIS GROUP DOES NOT TAKE ONLINE PAYMENTS, EVERYONE WILL SHOW AS 'UNPAID'. PLEASE IGNORE. **1\. Julia \- Sandra Newman** London, chief city of Airstrip One, the third most populous province of Oceania. It's 1984 and Julia Worthing works as a mechanic fixing the novel-writing machines in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Under the ideology of IngSoc and the rule of the Party and its leader Big Brother, Julia is a model citizen - cheerfully cynical, believing in nothing and caring not at all about politics. She knows how to survive in a world of constant surveillance, Thought Police, Newspeak, Doublethink, child spies and the black markets of the prole neighbourhoods. She's very good at staying alive. But Julia becomes intrigued by a colleague from the Records Department - a mid-level worker of the Outer Party called Winston Smith; she comes to realise that she's losing her grip and can no longer safely navigate her world. Seventy-five years after Orwell finished writing his iconic novel, Sandra Newman has tackled the world of Big Brother in a truly convincing way, offering a dramatically different, feminist narrative that is true to and stands alongside the original. For the millions of readers who have been brought up with Orwell's *Nineteen Eighty-Four*, here, finally, is a provocative, vital and utterly satisfying companion novel. **2\. Erasure \- Percival Everett** With your book sales at an all-time low, your family falling apart, and your agent telling you you're not black enough, what's an author to do? Thelonius 'Monk' Ellison has the answer. Or does he . . . ? Séamus
Meet up, Warm up, and Get Moving to Get Fit :)
Meet up, Warm up, and Get Moving to Get Fit :)
We will start the session with some light stretching exercises to warm us up, and help to prepare us for the run. The pace of the run will be steady, depending on who is running with us on the day. Days when we have a large group we may break into multiple groups, each operating independently at their own pace. Saturdays are good for intermediate runners, and is usually a 10km run, again at a steady pace. If you're looking to get into running, come along on Tuesday or Thursday mornings and I will coach you, at your pace, to get you up to running (jogging) to 5km without stops. The only thing I will ask, if you're a beginner, is that you're able to walk for approx 30 minutes at a relaxed pace. PLEASE NOTE: That, if you RSVP a particular event, then please ensure that you attend, as there may be other members relying on you for company on the run. IMPORTANT NOTE: Any run or activity that you participate in with the group will be at your own risk. Usually we have a post run (after our cool down) coffee in the Dash container at the Hole in the Wall pub.

**Tuesday Evening Taught Life Classes** Book a place here **[http://dublinlifedrawing.com/taughtclass](http://dublinlifedrawing.com/taughtclass)** Drawing from the figure has been part of an artist's basic training since ancient times, and for good reason. Drawing from observation teaches you how co-ordinate the eye and hand, and working from the nude model is the most rewarding kind of drawing. A set of taught classes will explain fundamental aspects of drawing the figure, and give tips and show tricks of exploring the materials, methods and approaches to rendering the figure on paper. This class is suitable for everyone- from beginners just starting off on their drawing journey, to more experienced people who want to build up their skills set. Basic techniques are outlined in every class, and then more complex exercises are explored. Drawing exercises take place in an easy, informal setting. Measuring, sighting, and understanding negative space and shading are explored as well as basic anatomy and proportion. Some easels and drawing boards are provided. Basic drawing materials and paper are included in the price (but feel free to bring your own). [-Book Here](http://dublinlifedrawing.com/short-course) Small class sizes with tuition and instruction will help with developing your own drawing methods and style. The teaching exercises are based on fine art practice but will be of great interest to illustrators, designers, and animators. 📚 Books & Social 🍸
📚 Books & Social 🍸
📚Reading books and discussing them are two distinct experiences! Conversations about books and sharing insights help us better appreciate literature and enrich our lives. Let's grab a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and discuss books we're currently reading or have recently enjoyed—whether poetry, fiction, or non-fiction. Bring your physical book or e-reader. There's no formal structure or agenda—just books and good conversation.💬 It's a perfect place to get book recommendations and rediscover your reading momentum if you've hit a slump. We welcome readers of all backgrounds and interests! ⚠️**Something Happened?** If something unpleasant happened to you, it may happen to others. Even if it seems minor, don't hesitate to reach out to me. 🔍 **How to find us?** * When I reach the venue, I'll leave a comment in the meetup where the group is seated. Normally, the booking is in my name, so you can ask the staff for the group. * If you're unable to find us, leave a comment in the meetup page. I'll be able to guide you. We highly encourage you to move between tables and strike up conversations with fellow book lovers. These discussions about literature and reading recommendations are often the highlight of the event! As an organizer, I'm always looking for feedback about the event and suggestions for new events, so feel free to suggest ideas to me. 💡 I look forward to seeing you all! 😊

*Sold out* The House Must Win matinée - musical (Pavillion, Dun Laoghaire)
**Written by Mick Flannery, *The House Must Win* is a gritty new musical drama** **that sweeps audiences into the emotional undertow of its story and song.** Please secure your own ticket for Sunday afternoon matinee performance. Welcome to include your seat number in the comments for others to purchase adjacent seats: I'm in seat D5. Legendary Irish comedian, actor and broadcaster **Tommy Tiernan** will make his musical theatre debut in the role of Ray, while rising Belfast actor and singer-songwriter **Tabitha Smyth** will play Grace, Ray’s daughter. They will feature as part of a sterling ensemble cast of seven alongside **Ferdia Walsh-Peelo** (*Sing Street*), **Niall McNamee** (*Saipan*), **John McCarthy**, **Orlagh De Bhaldraithe** and **Damian Kearney**. Directed by **Julie Kelleher**, with **Liam Robinson** (*Hadestown*) as Music Supervisor and **Ciarán Bagnall** on Set and Lighting Design, the creative team has worked closely with Mick over the past three years, shaping the world he has envisioned through this new script and its twenty-one songs. Set on the western edge of Ireland in the 1970s, it follows two brothers living with the odds stacked against them. Each takes a different path in the hope of leading a “good” life, both trying to honour the woman who holds their hearts. In a town of backroom poker games, secrets and bribes, broken families and broken hearts, the people of this place must learn how to play the cards they’ve been dealt – and discover what it truly means when *the house must win.* Twenty years ago, Mick Flannery released his debut album *Evening Train*, originally written in response to a college assignment to “write a musical.” Mick did exactly that, though at the time he focused solely on the lyrics and music. Two decades later, following various iterations and workshop developments, he has now written the script for the first time, bringing to life the songs from that debut album alongside ten new compositions to create *The House Must Win*.

AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s? This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation? We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee. Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus. This session introduces Squad: an open-source framework for multi-agent orchestration that lets you define teams of AI agents with specific roles, responsibilities, and expertise. We'll progress from Copilot basics to the Copilot CLI, explore how Agents add autonomy, and see how Instructions and Skills let you customize agent behavior. Then, the climax: a live demo where a Squad team of 3 agents (Lead, Developer, Tester) stands up and builds a working application in real-time, showcasing true multi-agent collaboration. Whether you're new to AI or exploring how to scale your use of Copilot, this session will show you what's possible when agents work as a team. **YouTube Link** TBD
