Reading group: The Burnout Society
In this iteration of the Philosophy of Life Sciences Reading group we'll explore biopolitics in the 21st century, through Byung-Chul Han's *The Burnout Society*. We'll focus on chapters 1-6, but it's a pretty short book so, if you have the time, feel free to read the whole thing. Anyone from any background is welcome!
Byung-Chul Han frames neurological disorders, such as ADHD and burnout, as excesses of positivity, rather than negativities, symptoms of a society that continually demands for participation and production. Have we moved beyond disciplinary power? How should we respond to a society that demands us to be always active? And, given the recent "vibe shift", is this critique of neoliberalism even relevant?

Orpington British Sign Language Practice Group Monthly Meeting
Orpington BSL conversation group. Open to anyone wishing to brush up or practice their British Sign Language skills in a relaxed, unstructured setting with like minded people.
We meet on the third Saturday of the month at The Second Home café, in Orpington High Street (BR6 0NB), from 11am to 1pm.
Come join us for a cuppa and brunch whilst practicing your BSL.
This is an unstructured group, so anyone is welcome. We only ask that you are respectful of each other, regardless of gender, religion, sexuality and beliefs. During our conversation meetings, we appreciate if we all adhere to a 'voice off' policy, to maximise our BSL use. If you don't know a particular sign, don't just say the word... Fingerspell it; gesture it; paraphrase what you mean with the signs that you know, write it down in paper... Anything is good, as long as you give it your best!

Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet outside St Giles Cripplegate.
Here's how it works:
* At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
* We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.

**FI NEWSLEARNS -**
A monthly, in-person session where we gather to examine the week’s biggest headlines — scrutinising sources, narratives, and editorial decisions as unofficial editors of an open-source newsroom.
**THE CONCEPT**
Inspired by *the open-source newsroom model*, this **meetup** brings that spirit into real life. We create a space for honest, constructive analysis of how the news is covered and how the cycle impacts our interests.
**WHO IT’S FOR**
Originally built for journalists, it’s open to everyone. Media professionals, researchers, students, and curious members of the public — all perspectives are welcome.
No credentials needed — just a critical eye.
**WHAT WE DO**
Each session, participants step into the role of FI editors and journalists. Together, we examine real headlines, using the FI platform live to improve news literacy and encourage civil, collaborative discussion in a non-judgemental environment.
**BEFORE ATTENDING;**
Before attending, we ask participants to review the monthly news cycle and come prepared with 3–4 editorial observations. These can include red flags (e.g. bias, weak sourcing, misleading framing) or green flags (e.g. strong evidence, balanced reporting, transparency) to discuss with the group.

Public Speaking Practice Saturdays (FREE for first timers)
Come and get the chance to speak in a supportive and friendly environment. Public Speaking will boost your confidence and give you more power to speak and to be listened to in both your personal and professional life.
**What makes this public speaking session different from others you ask?**
There is a strong emphasis on self-expression, creativity, trial and error, and most importantly, speaking practice!
**What will you gain from this event?**
* Gain confidence by overcoming your fear of public speaking
* Learn to think on your feet with our Impromptu speaking format
* Get feedback and improve your public speaking with a real audience
* Tips and opportunities to practice: body language, voice, tone, pitch, uses of stories, use of pauses, humour, etc...
**Here's how it works:**
\*I may choose to change the format from time to time based on numbers, and to practice different aspects of public speaking in order to keep it challenging\*
You will put your name in a hat/bowl and when your name is chosen, you will be asked to perform.
You will speak for 2 minutes on a random topic given by the audience. This is called an impromptu speech.
We will do 2-3 rounds of speaking followed by a feedback session at the end of the workshop.
**Public Speaking suggestions:**
TIP: Give your impromptu speech the following 3 sections below.
1. Introduction ("Today, I'm going to talk about....")
2. Body ("Here is my personal experience....")
3. Conclusion ("So, my key message is ....")
Each speech is to be 2 minutes long. Audience size 10-15 people.
You're not obligated to speak, although I may strongly encourage you to do so.
**What to bring:** Yourself only- There are no mandatory necessities which you must bring.
**Dress Code:** There is no dress code. It is best practice however, that you wear the attire for the occasion which you are practicing for.
