Reading Roundtable
February 16, 2010
Cathy : Born to Run; Christopher McDougall. A mix of cultural anthropology, evolution, and anatomy & physiology. Looks at running from many aspects including the Tarahumara, natives of Mexico’s Copper Canyons. Cathy says Christopher is a great storyteller and this book has lots of fun stories in it. https://www.usnews.com... (https://www.usnews.com/health/blogs/on-fitness/2009/4/28/born-to-run-christopher-mcdougall-says-humans-evolved-to-run-like-the-tarahumara.html)
A Short History of Nearly Everything; Bill Bryson. Really the history of science and scientists. Puts many things in word pictures to make complex concepts attainable to the non-scientist. https://www.randomhous... (https://www.randomhouse.com/features/billbryson/bb_title/display.pperl?isbn=9780767908184)
Sharon Cartlidge: Ghost: Confessions of a Counterterrorism Agent; Fred Burton. A memoir of a Stratfor counterterrorist. A look back at 30 years of counterterrorism, from a field that was relatively unknown in the 1980’s through 9/11 and the aftermath. What we should learn from terrorism’s history. https://www.stratfor.c... (https://www.stratfor.com/ghost/the_book)
Debra : Everyday Justice; Julie Clawson. Julie is a local Christian blogger who writes in this book about how we can live our lives daily in a way that is just. https://julieclawson.c... (https://julieclawson.com/everyday-justice/)
Teaching a Stone to Talk; Annie Dillard A collection of religious and secular essays. In one, Dillard writes about the power of evoking God in worship.
Mudhouse Sabbath; Lauren Winner. Winner discusses the traditions of the Jewish religion that she misses as a converted Christian. She writes about hospitality, the Sabbath, mourning. https://www.laurenwinn... (https://www.laurenwinner.net/books/index.html)
Janie: House of Mirth; Edith Wharton Janie is enjoying rereading Edith Wharton—she called them chewy books. This is set in New York in the 1890’s and is probably autobiographical. An inside look at NY society and class structure.
Kay : Have a Little Faith; Mitch Albom. Albom is asked by a rabbi to give his eulogy. While Albom is getting to know the rabbi better, he is also involved with an African-American pastor in inner city Detroit who is a former drug addict and convict. Albom moves between these worlds—black and white, Jewish and Christian and explores the striking unity in the differences and the comfort of believing in something bigger than self. Albom was inspired to start www.aholeintheroof.org as the pastor kept tending to his mission and congregation even though the roof was caving in on his church. This organization provides building materials for basic infrastructure for organizations that support homeless populations. https://mitchalbom.com... (https://mitchalbom.com/books/node/5515)
Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family helped me Conquer Life’s Challenges; Byron Pitts Pitts, a correspondent with 60 minutes tells his story in this book. He stuttered and was functionally illiterate until he was in his teens. https://us.macmillan.c... (https://us.macmillan.com/stepoutonnothing)
True Blue; David Baldacci. The story of a female cop who is setup and sent to jail. Her sister, the DC police chief helps to uncover the conspiracy that led to her arrest.
Mary Margaret (Kay’s friend) Half Broke Horses; Jeanette Walls. Walls calls this “true life fiction” it is an account of her grandmother, an Arizona farmer in the early 1900s. Mary Margaret said this book is not as good as Glass Castle, also by Walls, and felt the book read as a series of incidents rather than a novel
Spooner; Pete Dexter. Dexter’s somewhat autobiographical odyssey of Spooner, an weird child who grows up to be a weird adult. https://www.nytimes.co... (https://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/books/review/Schillinger-t.html)
Company of Liars; Karen Maitland. Set in 1300’s England, a band of travelers are trying to avoid the plague. Told from the perspective of each of the nine travelers, who each also have a secret they are keeping from their companions. https://www.karenmaitl... (https://www.karenmaitland.com/books/liars.html)
Leslie Chopin Manuscript: A Serial Mystery Jeffery Deaver, et.al. A book written by lots of different suspense writers. Deaver sets the tone of the book in the first chapter and finishes the story with the last two. In between, other authors write the book, one chapter each. This led to a suspenseful, quick read. This is set in modern times, with a manuscript authenticator leaving Poland with what he feels is a Chopin forgery. He is stopped in the airport by police and told the person he got it from has been murdered. He must figure out why he was murdered—a tale that revolves around his involvement in the Serbo-Croatian war and genocide in the 1990’s.
Judy Pleading Guilty; Scott Turow. About a cop turned lawyer. Judy liked the book but found the end disappointing in terms of ethics and justice.
Rainbow’s End Martha Grimes. Part of the Jury series. Jury is a member of Scotland Yard who is following the trail of three women whose deaths by “natural causes” seem suspicious to him. His work leads him to New Mexico and a 13 year old girl with a pet coyote. https://www.marthagrim... (https://www.marthagrimes.com/books/rainbows-end/)
Lions of Lucerne Brad Thor. The Lions of Lucerne is Thor's first novel, and introduces the character of Scot Harvath, an ex-Navy SEAL and current U.S. Secret Service agent. Harvath survives an attack which leaves 30 of his fellow agents dead, and the president of the United States kidnapped. He begins a search for those responsible, and attempts to rescue the president. Judy liked the plot and dialogue, but thought is was not smoothly written. https://www.bradthor.c... (https://www.bradthor.com/)
Gun Shy; Ben Rehdar Rehdar’s books start with a game warden as the main character and lots of quirky rednecks as side characters. These characters become more and more involved as his books progress. https://www.benrehder.... (https://www.benrehder.com/previous.html)
Face of a Stranger; Anne Perry. Set in London in the 1850’s, a police man has amnesia and has to hide this from coworkers, witnesses and suspects as he tries to figure out who tried to kill him.

Becoming the Unfinished Man
Most men don’t lack potential.
They lack **clarity, regulation, and direction**.
This gathering is for men who feel they are in a transition — between who they’ve been and who they know they’re becoming — and want a space to think clearly, speak honestly, and move forward deliberately.
There will be room for listening.
There will be room for receiving.
This is not about pretending to have it all figured out.
In this session, we’ll explore:
* What stage we feel like we're stuck in.
* How to align Identity with our actions
* How emotional regulation creates confidence and authority
* What it actually means to “work on yourself” in real life
* How to move even when others around you are stuck
The format is conversational, reflective, and practical.
You’ll leave with **clear distinctions, grounded insight, and a stronger internal compass** — not hype.
You don’t need to be confident.
You don’t need to be complete.
You just need to be honest about being **unfinished**.
This is a room for men who are still becoming.
This group is best suited for men who value reflection, responsibility, and growth over blame or posturing.

HABEX2 - High Altitude Balloon Flight - Design Update - Hybrid
This is the monthly design status and update meeting. Participation is both in person and online.
Members of Austin Physics for Fun are now involved in the effort. -- [https://www.meetup.com/physics-1/](https://www.meetup.com/physics-1/)
The meeting will be held at a private makerspace, Diogenes. It is located in the same building as the adult club Colette Austin. The door is at the left end of the building, Suite C. Go to the back of the first floor workspace and head upstairs.
.If you have questions please feel free to submit them in the comments below or send them to me directly.
Zoom meeting details will be posted about a half hour before the meeting begins.
HABEX - High Altitude Balloon Experiments
The reference to experiments is two-fold. The first is in regard to the actual balloon construction and flight processes. The second is a reference to the payload and what it does during the flight (e.g. images, environmental measurements, etc.). To be clear, there will be two design processes going on in parallel, the balloon proper and the payload. This initial flight is really focusing on the balloon to get that process pinned down and clearly defined. The initial payload should be simple (e.g. digital camera taking pictures).
One of the primary design considerations will be the use of CanSat techniques in the design and construction process. We may need to build a technology demonstrator for this (i.e. dummy payload) before the actual flight process.
CanSat -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanSat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanSat)
Design Process:
Design/Buy > Assemble > Test > Loop (Will it fly?) > Flight Plan
Meeting Sequence:
Pilot - Initial meeting (possibly two) to gauge interest and get first round of participants.
Design - Group responsible for the first four stages of the Design Process. - Multiple meetings.
Pre-Flight - Review process to date and verify readiness - Set the date of launch - Possibly two meetings
Launch - Two teams (Launch and Recovery)
Clean up - Launch team cleans up launch site and transitions to tracking and telemetry
Recovery - Recovery team (possibly several groups) chases the balloon and tries to stay ahead of it.
Post-Flight - Review, analysis, and release of flight report (including experimental results if any).
Flight Plan:
* Pre-Flight
* Schedule
* Assembly
* Launch
* Tracking
* Recovery
* Review/Release Results
Constraints:
* COVID 19
* Budget
* Resources/Tools/Facilities
* Legal (e.g. FAA rules about weight and number of modules)
* People
* Transportation

The Story So Far: A WiA Reflection Circle
A WiA Collective Wisdom Exchange
At the start of this year, we gathered to look back, set intentions, and imagine the next chapter.
This is the follow-up.
Not a check-in. Not a progress report. A small, facilitated circle to reconnect with what you said mattered — and honestly explore what’s actually happening now.
Together, we’ll explore:
• What you intended at the start of this year - and what that looks like three months in
• What’s surprised you, supported you, or shifted
• What the next chapter needs now that you know what you know
If you were at our January gathering, bring whatever you made or wrote — your word, your artifact, your intention. We’ll look at it with fresh eyes. If this is your first time, you belong here too. You’ll start where we all started: with what’s true right now.
Optional art materials will be available for anyone who wants to reflect creatively alongside conversation. If you brought something home from January, you’re warmly invited to bring it back.
The intention is the same as always: everyone leaves feeling more clear, more connected, and a little lighter.
Space is intentionally limited to keep the experience intimate.
What to Expect
• A small, welcoming circle (not a large meetup)
• Structured conversation so everyone has space to speak
• Reflection, listening, and lived experience — not advice-giving
• Optional creative reflection alongside conversation
• A calm, supportive environment
Who This Is For
Women and underrepresented folks working in or around agile, product, technology, leadership, or organizational change — especially those looking for honest conversation and community beyond frameworks and buzzwords.
Good to Know
• No preparation required
• If you attended in January, we invite you to bring anything you created or wrote (or something that represents your intention at the start of the year) - it’s optional but invited
• Participation is invitational; listening is always welcome
• Creative activities are optional

What If Your AI Could Be a Team? - Chad Green
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge.
**Abstract**
GitHub Copilot is powerful, but what if you could scale from a solo AI assistant to an entire team of specialized agents working in parallel? This session introduces Squad: an open-source framework for multi-agent orchestration that lets you define teams of AI agents with specific roles, responsibilities, and expertise.
We'll progress from Copilot basics to the Copilot CLI, explore how Agents add autonomy, and see how Instructions and Skills let you customize agent behavior. Then, the climax: a live demo where a Squad team of 3 agents (Lead, Developer, Tester) stands up and builds a working application in real-time, showcasing true multi-agent collaboration.
Whether you're new to AI or exploring how to scale your use of Copilot, this session will show you what's possible when agents work as a team.
