Profs & Pints DC: Goddess of Spring and the Underworld
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Goddess of Spring and the Underworld,”** an introduction to the Greek goddess Persephone in her many incarnations, with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University and co-founder of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/spring-and-underworld](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/spring-and-underworld) .]
Join Brittany Warman, who has earned a huge following among Profs and Pints fans by delivering fantastic talks on folklore, myths, legends, and fantasy, for the perfect event for the season: a look at the spring goddess Persephone and the many ways in which she has inspired the human imagination.
The story of Hades and Persephone is one of the most famous—and most retold—episodes in Greek mythology. Persephone’s abduction, her interlude in the Underworld, and her partial return to the world above have inspired statues and webcomics, ancient cults and contemporary poetry. Thousands of years after her tale was first told, we’re still fascinated by this goddess.
Brittany will discuss how Persephone’s appeal lies in her liminality in being caught between two very different worlds and lives. She represents spring, renewal, and rebirth because Earth blooms with her return, but she’s also the Queen of the Underworld. From a 21st-century perspective, she’s basically a goth girl adorned with a flower crown.
We’ll also look at Persephone’s mythic roots, including their connections to the Eleusinian Mysteries. And then we’ll dive into some of the ways that Persephone has been revised and retold in recent years, from the Tony award-winning musical *Hadestown* to the webcomic *Lore Olympus* to memes and fairy tales and fashion.
After all, why be just one thing when you can be the queen of both spring and darkness? (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

⚰️🎬 LEE CRONIN'S THE MUMMY (PREMIUM EXPERIENCE)
🗿 ***For those seeking a night of supernatural thrills, A Night of Ancient Horror could be just the antidote… but beware what you may unleash.***
👋 **Hey guys!** This new project by ***[Evil Dead Rise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqQNO7BzN08)*** director **Lee Cronin** is already generating a lot of buzz. While plot details are mostly still under wraps, it’s described as a fresh and terrifying take on the classic mummy mythos — possibly focusing on ancient evils and the horrors that follow.
Oh, by the way, **this film isn’t connected to the old Universal Mummy franchise** starring **Brendan Fraser** or the more recent **Tom Cruise** reboot — it’s a completely standalone horror film.
So here’s the plan for our Friday Night Mummy Meet-Up! We’ll kick off the weekend vibe with drinks before the movie and share some of our favorite horror films from the past. After the screening, we’ll reconvene for a **[Letterboxd Page](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse/)** review and a good chat.
We'll start the night of ancient chills at the **Look Dine-In Bar** (far end, past the box office) for casual drinks and chat. Then we’ll head over to **Screen 2**, where I’ll be seated at **F8** in case you’d like to join me on that row. After the film, we’ll reconvene for a **[Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse/)** review and one last catch-up.
If you’re into horror and curious to see how Cronin reimagines a classic monster, this is one to look forward to.
**Looking forward to seeing you guys there**

· Lola · by Andrew Legge @ Beatley Library
In 1940 an English inventor develops a machine that can receive radio/TV broadcasts from the future. She uses it to further British efforts in WW2, but as always in time-travel and time-manipulation tales, there are unforeseen consequences. This would have been an impressive feature if financed by a major studio, but the meager budget available for this indie mandated filming techniques that make the story even more compelling.

Happy Hour - DC Creative Collective for Film, TV, Theater Enthusiast
Join us for another lively gathering of the DC Creative Collective for Film, TV, and Theater — a welcoming space for filmmakers, writers, actors, and creative enthusiasts across the DMV to connect and create together. This meetup is a chance to connect with fellow artists, an opportunity to catch up with each other, and discuss opportunities for collaboration.
This meeting we will also host a table read for the script Waterborne by member Iman Sule. Whether you are experienced in the industry or just beginning your creative journey, come ready to build community, share stories, and help shape a collaborative artistic home where ideas move from imagination to stage and screen.
Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse - DC’s NEW Improv Troupe - The Ripple Effect
Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse with The Ripple Effect Improv Troupe
Let’s be honest. Life gives us plenty of serious moments.
This night is not one of them.
Join us from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM for a night of spontaneous comedy with The Ripple Effect, an improv troupe that travels around the DMV bringing laughter to places where people could use a little more joy.
Hospitals, community events, gatherings like this one. Anywhere people need a good laugh, we show up and start a ripple.
And once the laughter starts, it spreads fast.
If you’ve never seen improv live before, you’re in for a treat. Nothing is scripted. No one knows what’s going to happen next, including us. The entire show is built in real time based on your suggestions from the audience.
You might shout out a job.
A location.
A random object.
And suddenly you’re watching a scene about a dog therapist with boundary issues or a married couple arguing about who forgot to charge the emotional support Roomba.
That’s the magic of improv. Quick thinking, unexpected twists, and the kind of laughter that sneaks up on you.
Why people love watching improv:
*You laugh harder because you never see the joke coming.
*You get to participate by shouting out ideas that shape the scene.
*You watch performers build something hilarious out of thin air.
And the whole audience ends up laughing together because everyone is experiencing something that has never happened before and will never happen again.
You’ll definitely walk out feeling lighter than when you walked in.
And along the way you might meet a few new people who also enjoy laughing.
Because honestly… who doesn’t want funny friends?
The vibe for the evening
This is a relaxed BYOB potluck gathering under the pavilion.
*Bring your favorite drink.
*Bring a dish to share.
*Bring a lawn chair if you have one.
If you forget a chair, no problem. You can grab one of the chairs here, relax on the in-ground trampoline, or find a cozy spot around the pavilion.
We’ll have the fire going, s’mores ready, and plenty of room to settle in and enjoy the show.
Think backyard comedy club meets campfire hangout.
Great people.
Great laughs.
A little silliness.
And a ripple of joy spreading through the crowd.
Come join us,
Janine, your happy host

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.

Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you knew Del Close on a personal level, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup** for some fun and games!
The idea behind improv is to create entire scenes from scratch based on a suggestion from the audience. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway*, *ComedySportz*, or *Wild 'n Out*; it could also be done to tell stories, like *Middleditch and Schwartz*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and free!) weekly comedy event, brings the games (and occasionally different forms) for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and make friendships that'll last a lifetime!
Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "Yes, And" that you'll have fun!
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for April is "Water"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
City Lights (1931)
In *City Lights*, Chaplin's Little Tramp meets a blind girl selling flowers who mistakes him for a wealthy man. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. He also befriends an alcoholic millionaire who only recognizes him when he is drunk. When the blind girl and her grandmother fall behind in the rent and face eviction, he tries working and even enters a boxing competition to raise the money they need.
Regarded as Chaplin's masterpiece, *City Lights* has been ranked on more than seventeen "100 greatest movies of all time" lists. Orson Welles cited it as his favorite picture.
*City Lights* is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBOMax, Tubi and PlutoTV. The Columbus Library lists three copies on blu-ray and eight copies on DVD. Watch the movie on your own, then join us upstairs at East Market to discuss the film.
