Introduction to Practical Philosophy
**You know there’s more to life than this.**
More than the noise. More than the striving. More than the constant doing.
If you’ve ever felt that quiet inner pull toward something deeper, this afternoon is for you.
Join us for an Open House at the **School of Practical Philosophy in Toronto** — a not-for-profit community where philosophy is not studied as theory, but lived in everyday life.
This is not a lecture. It’s a conversation.
A space for reflection, inquiry, and genuine connection with others who are also seeking truth.
All of our courses are offered by long-time students of the School who volunteer their time — not because they are paid, but because they have experienced the value of this work and wish to share it.
What to expect:
* A welcoming, no-pressure environment
* An introduction to practical philosophy (East + West, applied to daily life)
* A simple mindfulness exercise you can take home immediately
* Thought-provoking discussion with like-minded people
You are invited to attend with **no obligation**.
Stay for the first class, experience it for yourself, and decide if it resonates.
Come as you are — curious, questioning, or simply open.
Register to secure your spot: **[OPEN HOUSE](https://schoolofpracticalphilosophy.asapconnected.com/?org=1361#CourseGroupID=44887)**

You can pre-purchase your ticket to confirm your spot on https://lvlupgames.ca/products/saturday-night-riftbound \~
**What is Riftbound?**
Riftbound is a new physical trading card game from Riot Games set in the world of League of Legends. Players compete to score points by controlling battlefields with units, spells, and gear, with the first to reach eight points winning. The game is designed to be easy to learn and supports both one-on-one and multiplayer (up to four players) games.
Connection Labs Online (aka Crossroads & Connections)
### Each Crossroads & Connections workshop is a fast, friendly mash-up: short demos, paired practices and intentional reflection. We keep it light, embodied, and social—so wisdom lands in your muscles and your circle, not only your mind. There isn’t one technique that fixes everything, for everyone, in every situation.
### What is it?
We pair complementary domains to spark shared flow, fresh insight, and unforgettable “aha!” moments. You leave with lived skills, not just notes.
* **Dialogue** gets you out of solo spin: small-group formats expose blind spots and sharpen “shared reality,” so your next move matches *this* person and *this* moment.
* **Imaginal** practice is guided “as if” rehearsal you look *through*, not *at*: walking the beats before the scene means your body recognizes turns when stakes rise.
* **Mindfulness** steadies the camera: attention stops jerking around, drama gets de-amplified, and you can catch the instant you’re narrating motives and swap in one honest question.
* **Embodiment** makes it actionable through direct, non-verbal experience and how your inner experience matches your outer expression.

Stoa of Ontario Monthly Meeting
**Toronto Stoics: Monthly Meetup**
*Modern Wisdom. Practical Living. Local Community*.
We are a monthly gathering dedicated to exploring Stoic philosophy and its real-world application. Whether you are a long-time practitioner or just curious about how ancient wisdom can help navigate modern life, you are welcome here.
*What to Expect*
Our meetups are casual, conversational, and focused on utility. Each month, we gather at a member's home in Toronto to deconstruct a specific Stoic quote or concept. We move past the theory to discuss how these ideas actually work when the pressure is on—helping us build resilience, focus on what we can control, and refine our character.
*Why Stoicism?*
Simply put, Stoicism was designed to help people live their best possible lives. It is a framework for:
- Maximizing Clarity: Focusing energy on what is within our power.
- Reducing Friction: Managing negative emotions like anxiety and anger.
- Honing Virtue: Cultivating the strength of character to handle any situation.
Stoicism doesn’t require hours of meditation or a degree in philosophy. It is a "boots-on-the-ground" toolkit for finding tranquility and staying effective at any stage of life.
**Join us monthly to find a little more perspective and a lot more practical wisdom.**

Earth’s Geologic History: Plate tectonics, Pangaea, and Magma Oceans
While a philosopher might ask the question, “Why are we here?”, geologists want to know, “How did we get here?”. In this meetup we will travel back in time through the Earth’s history; learning how our planet operates today, what it may have been like in the past, and the tools geologists use to figure these things out. Join us for this quick trip through geologic time, from the Anthropocene to the Hadean!
For this meetup, we have an expert in earth sciences who will share her expertise with us and facilitate the gathering.
Silvia Castilla is a PhD student in the Earth Sciences department at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on volcanology and isotope geochemistry to understand the processes that occur before volcanic eruptions. Her PhD project involves studying rocks from around the world, conducting stable isotope analyses, and applying these techniques to determine how long it takes for a volcano to erupt.

No readings for this meetup, but I’m including a great Radiolab episode that explains the science of dating rocks [https://radiolab.org/podcast/heavy-metal](https://radiolab.org/podcast/heavy-metal)

Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism")
Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war).
Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
