"On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous" by Ocean Vuong
*On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous* is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, *On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous* is as much about the power of telling one's own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.
With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years.

Trustworthy AI Circle. Trust or verify? How to navigate confidence in LLM output
Please register at **https://luma.com/qh0g4i81** to receive the details about event location.
# LLM tools have become the default solution for everyday translation tasks — fast, convenient, and often surprisingly good. But when accuracy really matters — legal documents, brand messaging, or customer communication — most professionals still hesitate to fully trust the output.
This Trustworthy AI Circle round looks at a practical question: How can we make AI translation reliable enough for real business use – without introducing lengthy and expensive human-in-the-loop setups traditional agencies use?
Together with experts from **Supertext** we will look at a practical near-instant verification flow. We will approach the solution from two perspectives: business value from a marketing leadership viewpoint and practical implementation from an operational one. The discussion will explore where these perspectives align - and where they collide - in building trustworthy solutions that continuously improve the underlying AI model.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez
Welcome to the first meeting of the 20th Century World Literature Book Club Zurich!
For our first book, we’ll be reading *Chronicle of a Death Foretold*, a short, gripping, and beautifully written novel by Colombian author and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez. First published in 1981, it tells the story of a killing that everyone knows is coming, yet somehow no one stops.
We’ll meet in English for a friendly, open discussion. No academic background is needed — just read the book, bring your thoughts, and join the conversation.
This first book has been chosen by the organizer to get the club started. After our book club is actively underway, future reads will be selected through member nominations and voting.
Looking forward to meeting fellow readers and kicking things off together in April!
Philosophical Minds Reading - Kant
**Join us for the premier of a collective reading & text discussion session!**
Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) is one of the central figures of Western philosophy, known above all for his work on reason, autonomy, and moral judgment. His 1784 essay *Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung?* is short — a few pages — but precise in a way that rewards slow, careful reading.
For this session, we do exactly that: read the text together, paragraph by paragraph, in the tradition of a philosophy seminar. What does Kant mean by *Unmündigkeit* — the self-incurred immaturity he sees all around him? Where does he draw the line between the public and private use of reason, and does that distinction hold? These are not rhetorical questions; they are ones the text itself invites us to sit with.
It can serve as perfect preparation for the May event.
**Text access:**
Please bring a copy of the text in your preferred format and language with you. Recommended versions are
\- German original: [Kant, Immanuel, Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung](http://www.zeno.org/Philosophie/M/Kant,+Immanuel/Beantwortung+der+Frage:+Was+ist+Aufkl%C3%A4rung)
\- English Translation: [An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? by Immanuel Kant 1784](https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/kant/enlightenment.htm) or [this version](https://sites.evergreen.edu/politicalshakespeares/wp-content/uploads/sites/226/2015/12/Kant-A-response-to-the-question-What-is-Enlightenment.pdf)
**Meeting point:**
We meet at the main entrance of the **main building of the University of Zurich** and will find a place either in the wonderful Lichthof or on the terrace (depending on the weather). If you can't make it on time but still want to join, reach out to the host.
**For our reading events in general:**
Whether this format is new to you or a long-missed return to university seminars, you're warmly welcome. Bring a copy of the text in any language or edition you prefer — the reading itself is our guide.
Important: When you register for the event, please commit to it and **don't be a NO SHOW**. Presumably, when the old Stoics decided to go to an event, they kept to it ;)
We look forward to seeing you
Ticino hike - Nature trail “Zwischen Bergen und See”
The tour follows the nature trail ‘Zwischen Bergen und See’ featured on the official Ticino website. -> [Der Lehrpfad zwischen Bergen und See](https://www.ticino.ch/de/hike/details/Der-Lehrpfad-zwischen-Bergen-und-See/22874002.html)
We will be covering most of stages 1 and 2, from Dirinella to Magadino. The tour itself does not take us to the highest peaks, but is a route that could also be called “Spring in Ticino”, and I expect stunning blossoms, nature in full bloom and the Mediterranean setting of Ticino. A pleasure tour and a short holiday for the heart and the senses.

Book summary:
Daniel leads a rich life in the university town of Athens, Georgia. He's got a couple close friends, a steady paycheck working for a regional airline, and of course, for a few glorious days each Fall, college football tailgates. He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy -- despite the fact that he's suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair. Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he's not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he's almost sure he sees her being kidnapped.

April Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our April read is **_Martyr!_ by Kaveh Akbar.**
The story follows a young Iranian American poet grappling with grief, addiction, and the aching question of what makes a life meaningful. Drawn into an unexpected friendship with a terminally ill artist, he begins to confront faith, love, and the seduction of self-destruction. Lyrical, darkly funny, and emotionally piercing, the novel wrestles with beauty and despair in equal measure. It’s a story about longing—to be seen, to be forgiven, and to matter.
Looking forward to discussing with everyone!
We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.**
Happy reading! 📖
