Loving Kindness Meditation
Loving Kindness Meditation
Practicing Metta meditation improves a person’s mind state and has lasting and profound emotional, physical, and spiritual benefits. Through scientific research, Metta meditation, or loving-kindness, has been shown to decrease migraines, chronic pain, and symptoms of depression and PTSD. It increases compassion and feelings of empathy, as well as decreases criticism of self and others. It can even positively affect the aging process and makes you more resilient to stress. Each session includes a guided loving-kindness meditation, short discussion on a mindful element of loving-kindness, a handout and time to ask questions. Join our co-facilitators Pema Antoniotti and Chris Lee-Thompson and be prepared for a lively discussion. In our fall 2018 series we plan to cover the following topics (order to be decided), and will often add topics as the sessions progress in order to take into account the group’s needs and interests. --Introduction to Loving Kindness --Science-based benefits of Loving Kindness --The brain and the heart --Aspects of Loving Kindness: Gentleness --Aspects of Loving Kindness: Working with the inner critic --Aspects of Loving Kindness: Not feeling inconvenienced by others --Loving Kindness and Compassion --Tips to prepare the body for meditation --A review of how to sit comfortably As Pema and Chris come from different faith backgrounds, they will offer these new topics during the series: --Loving Kindness and the Buddhist Sutras --Loving Kindness in Christianity --Interfaith perspectives on Loving Kindness This group is held online using Zoom. We ask that you register on our website at https://www.joyfulpath.org/event/loving-kindness-meditation-group/2018-12-05/ so that we can prepare the session appropriately and send you handouts when we use them in the class. However, it is not mandatory to register. To participate by zoom, use this link: https://zoom.us/j/140322520

Transformative Meditation Practice
Transformative Meditation Practice
These special meditations are deeply steeped in the Tibetan tradition and often appeal to those who resonate with mystical or symbolic meditation practices. After generating compassion, one visualizes being immersed in a special quality or state of mind such as healing, wisdom, or purity. The meditations also include quiet contemplation of symbolic imagery, such as meditation on the Buddha. Many people who come to this for the first time experience a wave of peacefulness and a fresh, heart-centered aliveness. The spring meditations will be primarily Buddha of Compassion, Medicine Buddha and Buddha Shakyamuni with other meditations occasionally offered.
Listening Hour
Listening Hour
What it is A weekly 1 hour connection and empathy space currently hosted by people who have experience in NVC, for anyone interested in NVC. This is not a workshop but a peer listening space to encourage listening. Who it’s for Everyone who is interested in NVC is welcome. No need for formal training but it’s great if you have been to some trainings. Come if you want to practice listening. Come if you’d enjoy a listening ear. What happens We offer a structure which offers clear guidance to everyone about what to do. Format (Each host will hold the space in a slightly different way but the overall structure will be the same) • Check-in • breakout into 3s for empathy and listening. (Empathy guidelines will be given and you can respond to the generative question ‘What do you want empathy for or to talk through?’) • Closing Self responsibility This is a reminder that everyone is responsible for themselves and we encourage you to take care of your own emotional safety. Bear in mind your listening partners aren’t trainers or therapists. Is there any cost? We’re offering these sessions for free as we’d like to contribute to making empathy support more accessible, especially during these challenging times. Afterwards, if you are moved to do so, and can afford it, we’d be grateful for a donation to our chosen organisation: NVC Matters (the national organisation for NVC in the UK): Bank account: 65414848 SC: 089299 Please register here to get the zoom link sent to you for each session https://subscribepage.io/LHsignup

How to Be a Better Communicator - Free In-Person Seminar
Communication is everything in life! You are only as successful as your ability to communicate. \- What if you could confidently talk to anyone? \- What if you had the ability to calmly control every conversation? \- What if you could close that sale\, ask for that date\, make new friends\, repair problematic relationships\, get that raise\, or effortlessly express any idea with confidence? You can! The secret to success relies on your ability or inability to effectively communicate. Attend a free seminar and gain a better ability to communicate. Hosted by the Church of Scientology of Central Ohio 1266 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215 For more information, contact Rhiannon, the Event Host at 614-221-5024
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.

Humanist Program
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid.
