The Dissident Salon is a weekly poetry and performance series created as an extension of the DISSIDENT Club’s mission to provide a home for dissenting voices, hosted by Alissa Leeds. Rooted in the tradition of the literary salon, it treats writing and performance as public acts that question power and challenge the systems that shape our lives. Each week features a curated performer, followed by open mic sessions open to all. Work may be presented in English, French, or other languages. Multilingual expression is central to the space and reflects the realities of exile, displacement, and exchange that define the DISSIDENT Club. The Salon is an ongoing forum for people who speak publicly and think critically through art. Grandir entre plusieurs cultures, plusieurs langues, plusieurs mondes peut être une richesse immense. Mais cela peut aussi être un chemin intérieur complexe. Beaucoup d’enfants d’immigrés portent en eux des histoires de sacrifices, d’exil, d’attentes familiales et de loyauté invisible. Dans ce contexte, choisir sa propre voie peut parfois s’accompagner d’un sentiment profond de culpabilité. Choisir sa vie. Choisir ses rêves. Choisir une direction différente. Ou simplement se choisir soi-même. Et pourtant, ce choix peut parfois nous donner l’impression de trahir, de décevoir ou de s’éloigner de ceux qui ont tout donné pour nous. Racines Croisées est un cercle de parole bienveillant, pensé comme un espace sûr pour partager, écouter et réfléchir ensemble autour de ces expériences souvent invisibles. 🌱 Pour cette première rencontre, nous explorerons le thème : « La culpabilité de se choisir » À travers des échanges libres et respectueux, nous pourrons aborder des questions comme : Pourquoi se choisir peut parfois nous faire sentir égoïste ? Comment honorer l’histoire de nos parents sans renoncer à notre propre vie ? Comment vivre avec cette sensation d’être entre deux mondes ? Ce cercle est spécialement pensé pour les enfants d’immigrés, celles et ceux qui ont grandi entre plusieurs cultures et qui portent parfois cette déchirure silencieuse : celle de vouloir rester fidèles à leurs racines tout en cherchant leur propre place. Beaucoup d’entre nous ressentent aussi une forme de solitude dans cette expérience, l’impression que personne ne comprend vraiment ce tiraillement intérieur. The Unity of Columbus Resource Group for the Homeless is seeking compassionate volunteers who would like to help serve and uplift members of our homeless community. This group is dedicated to sharing kindness, resources, and support with individuals who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. Anyone with a heart for service is welcome to join us as we work together to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Community members are also invited to contribute by bringing helpful items for those in need. Donations of items can be contributed at the meeting and will be distributed to assist members of the homeless community. Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event: FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces. PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area.
