Despite the consensus that the right to emigrate is a fundamental right, it is sometimes argued that this right may be overridden by a countervailing duty to stay. Concerned with the impact of the so-called “brain drain”, many liberal political philosophers suggest that the emigration of large numbers of highly qualified people can severely harm their states of origin, and that, consequently, highly qualified professionals have, at least under certain conditions, a duty to stay. In this talk, I argue against the duty to stay. I first present what I take to be the strongest argument in support of a duty to stay: the argument that potential migrants have a duty to stay as part of the general duty of individuals to create and support just institutions. Then, I argue that this argument raises a normative paradox. It seems that the worse the conditions in one’s country of origin are, the stronger one’s duty would be to stay and support the creation of just institutions. And yet, an exit route from bad conditions in one’s state of origin was precisely what was taken to justify the right to emigrate. It seems that the more reasons we would have to recognize someone’s right to migrate, the more reasons we would also have to argue that they have a duty to not migrate. To resolve this paradox, I propose a reconceptualization of the duty to create and support just institutions. I suggest that the paradox arises because of the implicit adoption of a sedentarist and state-centric interpretation of the duty to create and support just institutions. I argue, firstly, that the duty to support just institutions can be considered to justify not only staying in one’s country, but also leaving that country. Secondly, I suggest that the duty to support just institutions is not necessarily limited to the support of state-level institutions. Last, I hold that the duty to create and support just institutions is sometimes compatible with breaking ties with one’s state of origin, and that each person is the best judge of whether this applies in their own case. Whether you're new to swimming or looking to brush up on your skills, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to enhance your abilities in a supportive and encouraging environment. Our families, or lack thereof, are one of the first things we become aware of. For better or worse, as children, most of us rely on family to meet our needs and help us learn how to exist in the world. Their presence or absence shapes our behaviours and affects how others treat us. We may be judged by what our parents do for work, how our children behave, whether we have strong or weak family values and ties, or our ability to fulfill familial obligations. ‘Family’ shapes how we come to learn about the world, how we relate to one another and to ourselves, and the goals we set. Through our lived experience, the stories we’re told, and the cultural values many of us have inherited, ‘family’ has become a relational category whose existence we assume is natural; that is, family units have always existed and always will. But could a world without families exist? Statistically, families are the epicentre for cases of violence and abuse, and perpetuating economic inequality. Given this, would we be *better off* in a world without family as we know it? Healing Development * *April 25th - 26th, 2026* * *9:00 am - 6:00 pm* * *In person* * *Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada* * *Stephen Ng Qui Sang* * *400 CAD (plus HST), approx. 290 USD* The Healing Development course is designed to enhance healing skills of different types of therapists, of those dealing with health challenges, and those interested in having more tools to maintain their own health and well-being. All those interested in personal healing or helping others will benefit from the Dolphin Energy Club exercises. These include special healing signals developed by Robert Monroe after researching the brain waves used by healers in the laboratory and then reverse-engineering audio signals that would facilitate others entering into that same healing state. Renowned healer Barbara Ann Brennan recommends that her students attend Monroe programs to enhance their skills and ability to move into different states of consciousness. You will have new tools to enhance skills associated with being able to increase and direct energy. These include several exercises in the Access Channel of Focus 11, a state of consciousness that Robert Monroe considered his most important contribution to personal development. The Access Channel in and of itself is a very special and highly receptive state of consciousness that can be used for accessing our inner knowing. The tools learned in this state are called Function Commands. Once learned, these verbal cues can be used in daily life at any time, to control different bodily or mental functions. In this program, one of the exercises addresses becoming more sensitive to sensory perception, improving seeing, hearing, and tactile feeling. Others deal with healing emotional issues and improving sleep. Opening the heart is the subject of another exercise, a necessary foundation for all healing processes. In it Spinoza discusses at length the historical circumstances of the composition and transmission of the Bible, demonstrating the fallibility of both its authors and its interpreters. He argues that free enquiry is not only consistent with the security and prosperity of a state but actually essential to them, and that such freedom flourishes best in a democratic and republican state in which individuals are left free while religious organizations are subordinated to the secular power. His Treatise has profoundly influenced the subsequent history of political thought, Enlightenment philosophy, Bible hermeneutics, and textual criticism more generally. This session introduces Squad: an open-source framework for multi-agent orchestration that lets you define teams of AI agents with specific roles, responsibilities, and expertise.
