Visualization of multivariate data — a talk at the FJS
Visualization of multivariate data — a talk at the FJS
Our co-organizer Ursula Laa will be giving a talk orgranized by the Young Statistician Forum (FJS), and you are welcome to join! Expect a technical tour of visualisation tools for multivariate and high-dimensional data in R with practical examples! **ℹ️ Abstract** Statistical graphics are central to exploring and modeling complex data. As dimensionality increases, uncovering structure and dependencies becomes more challenging. This presentation gives an overview of practical tools for visualizing multivariate data, from strategic use of scatterplots and scatterplot matrices to linear and nonlinear projection methods. Special emphasis will be placed on tour methods—animated sequences of linear projections—that reveal clustering, outliers, and nonlinear relationships. All graphics will be demonstrated in R, with code to reproduce the results. **🗺️ Location** Seminarraum 16 3rd floor Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1090 Vienna Use this [floor plan](https://event.univie.ac.at/fileadmin/user_upload/d_event/Dokumente/Raummanagement/PLAENE_NEU/Plaene_OMP/UEbersichtsplaene/01__3OG_Uebersicht.pdf) to help locate the room.

Walk & Talk Wien
Walk & Talk Wien
This week's event will be hosted by Sridhar (Srinivasan) one of our regulars, who is rediscovering the joy of being in nature and in community. He enjoys the stimulating interactions that arise from new connections while walking, and hopes that others also find their spark and are moved to flow, that eventually fulfills them. **Do you speak English? Then welcome to Walk & Talk!** This event is suited for all people who like to connect to other people and like to walk. The beauty of this regular event is that you are in the nature and you walk around 7 kilometers. In the meantime, if you feel for it, you talk, if not, you just walk. You do something for your health, get to know new people and you will feel much better. It’s FREE, all you need to do is to show up this Tuesday at no later than 1 pm at the U6 Spittelau exit to Donaukanal.

UX VIENNA at home with Arnold Schönberg
UX VIENNA at home with Arnold Schönberg
Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951) was one of the most significant figures in the creative world in the first half of the 20th century. Following in the tradition of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, the Austrian (and, after his immigration to New York and later Los Angeles, also US-American) composer, music theorist, teacher, and writer reshaped the practice of harmony in classical music. Some of Schönberg’s most famous contributions were the development of his twelve-tone-method and his attention to sound color (Klangfarbe), both of which strongly influenced generations of composers up until today. But Schönberg’s creative world goes beyond music. He was a designer, painter, inventor, and systems thinker: building tools and furniture, binding books, designing stage sets and costumes, inventing machines, and even building his own chess set, for four players. In this meetup, we explore Schönberg through a UX lens: what can his way of thinking, making, and problem-solving teach us about design, tools, and user experience today? We will also look at the museum and concert space as an experience that unfolds through the perception of an audience. The [Arnold Schönberg Center](https://schoenberg.at/) is a repository of Schönberg's archival legacy. Director Dr. Ulrike Anton will provide an introduction to the Arnold Schönberg Center. User researcher Dr. Franziska Brunner will give us a guided tour and lead a discussion of the exhibition. Arnold Schönberg's estate is on [UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register](https://www.unesco.at/en/communication/documentary-heritage/memory-of-the-world-in-austria/arnold-schoenberg-estate), recognized for its global importance as a documentary heritage. After an afternoon in the museum space from 3:00–6:00 p.m.. We also invite you to attend an [in-house concert at 6:30 p.m](https://schoenberg.at/en/events/upcoming-events/3793/loops-from-other-planets)., followed by dinner. 🎻 🍽️ * The €18 concert price includes entrance to the exhibit. (Entrance to just the exhibit without the concert costs € 6.) * Admission for both the museum and the concert is free for those under 26 years old. * Dinner afterwards is optional, and everyone will cover their own meal. *Photo: Replica of Schönberg's study room © Johannes Böck*
Free Meditation & Yoga – just show up – we start at 19.00 on Thursdays
Free Meditation & Yoga – just show up – we start at 19.00 on Thursdays
Hello there! We'd like to welcome you to our FREE Sahaja Yoga meditation meetings hosted by Wolfgang, Hamid, Anil, Shantanu & friends which take place in Vienna – 7pm Thursdays. With Sahaja Yoga Meditation we normally sit on chairs to achieve yoga, effortlessly & spontaneously. So there is no need for mats and no special clothing required. We are all volunteers of a Charity association and have many years of experience in offering free Sahaja Yoga Meditation classes. All across the globe, many are seeking new sources of energy. Meanwhile, the most transformative energy of all is hiding in plain sight, within us. It's natural, sustainable, and infinitely renewable. It's called inner kundalini energy. And everyone already has it — everyone!. It is often likened to an inner feminine or motherly energy which automatically knows about us and what is needed to help us restore balance and harmony within our subtle being. It works spontaneously, effortlessly, organically and cannot be paid for. The classes are designed to help those attending get into a genuine meditative state, which can be felt tangibly. It is quite effortless and spontaneous. The free classes feature introductory talks, video's, practical workshops and general question and answer opportunities, making them perfect for seekers trying to establish a state of yoga, and they are available across Vienna most evenings and throughout Austria. The idea is that you don't do yoga - you Achieve Yoga! Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a simple, time-honored technique. It helps those who enjoy it, reduce stress and increase wellness and health holistically. It brings better focus and helps people become more centered and better balanced. Anyone can do it. Founded by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a world wide movement for peace and self awakening. All the meetings and classes are free of any charge. Each week we go through simple meditation techniques, often with guided meditations to help reduce stress and achieve the peace of true meditation. We share tips on how to help stay in balance during the day and how to meditate at home. The meditation is based on connecting with the inner chakras (energy centres) and balancing the subtle body. The tradition and aims of meditation are explained which in essence is to be in the present with no mental activity or thoughts about the past or the future. Occasionally there are 1 day retreats to help those interested, deepen their individual experience and hear advice and tips from those who have been practicing for some time. It’s ultimately all about getting into ‘thoughtless awareness’, a natural state of being. 10 Reasons to try-out Sahaja Yoga Meditation in Vienna in 2015 It’s easy. You don’t have to spend years living in the mountains to achieve enlightenment. You don’t have to give up anything or spend weeks in silence. You don’t have to learn mantras or wear special clothes or even try to clear my mind. The meditation simply happens spontaneously. The classes are easy and fun, and as long as you keep up your daily ten minutes of meditation you find you are able to achieve a deep and peaceful meditation on a regular basis. It’s free. You don’t pay for your meditation. There are no catches, and there are no hidden expenses. If you missed attending classes one week, it doesn’t matter. You just picked up the classes again when you could manage it. It is simply the generosity of spirit of other Sahaja Yoga meditation practitioners that allows Sahaja Yoga to be taught to whomever desires it, at no cost. You can see results. You feel relaxed and you feel a deep sense of calm. Now you can also feel your chakras (energy centres) and through the meditation techniques learnt along the way you can understand the vibrations of your own energy centres. If you feel unwell you meditate and use the techniques you’ve learnt to heal your chakras, and you can then feel the centres clearing, and as a consequence your health improves. It’s all-inclusive. All the major religions and their core teachings are acknowledged and respected in Sahaja Yoga. No one’s spiritual journey is right or wrong. And through meditation the wisdom of all the great gurus and saints is easily revealed and understood. In fact, you’ll find that since you’ve been meditating you’ll come to understand and appreciate the teachings of great teachers such as Lao Tse, Buddha and Mohammed. You’re your own boss. You meditate and introspect at your own pace. You don’t have to keep up with others, or feel pressured into doing things you’re not comfortable with. You are your own teacher, your own guru, your own master. This technique of meditation empowers you and enables you to help yourself. You don’t have to rely on anybody else. Of course, there are many people who practice Sahaja Yoga Meditation who can teach you a great deal about the yoga & meditation and its various techniques. However, all that you need is ultimately within you. It’s everywhere. Sahaja Yoga is practiced in almost every country in the world. So, no matter where you travel you can always locate a local Sahaja Yoga Meditation programme that you can attend. Whenever you get the chance, and no matter where you are, You try to link up with other Sahaja Yoga practitioners and enjoy a collective meditation. (Meditating with others is a much deeper and more powerful experience than meditating alone.) It’s portable. You don’t need to take anything with you to meditate: no mats, no potions, no special clothing or books. You can meditate anywhere – in a quiet room or on a noisy bus; at the beach or watching a movie. Thoughtless awareness (the state of meditation) is easy to achieve if you keep meditating daily, and it can be achieved in almost any situation. It makes sense. Everything you’ll learn will make sense. There is a lot of common sense in Sahaja Yogameditation, and even though not everything was known to you (for example, the chakras and their respective qualities), once you have a chance to learn more about the meditation, it feels very natural and comfortable. Everybody does it. When you begin a hobby or join a new group, you often find that there are particular types of people who are in the group with you. For example, some groups attract younger people, others older folk; some groups have a lot of people who are wealthy, or people who live in a certain part of town. In Sahaja Yoga you will find people from every walk of life, from every demographic – male and female, young and old, rich and poor, every shape, size and colour, with varying interests, languages and beliefs. You don’t have to be a certain type of person to do Sahaja Yoga meditation. It is one of those rarities: something for everybody. You feel good. Without fail, every time you sit down to meditate you feel better. Whether you manage to have a deep meditation or not makes no difference, and as a consequence your family and friends are reaping the benefits. So there you have it......ten reasons...... Pop along to a Free Sahaja Yoga Meditation weekly Meeting

Spring in Znojmo (CZ): National Park Hike & Historic Town Walk
Hi everyone! On Saturday, April 25, 2026, I am planning a scenic spring hike in **Znojmo (Czech Republic)**. Join us for a relaxed and social day as we explore the historic town of Znojmo and beautiful sections of **Podyjí National Park**. **Highlights** 🌿 Scenic trails through parts of Podyjí National Park 🏰 Historic town of Znojmo with charming streets and viewpoints 🌄 Beautiful views over the Thaya river valley ☕ Flexible return — stay longer in Znojmo to explore, relax, or enjoy a café after the hike I also plan a short walk through the city so we can do some sightseeing together. After the hike, you are free to stay longer in Znojmo if you like. Since everyone buys their own train ticket, you can return at your preferred time. I highly recommend visiting the Znojmo Town Hall Tower (approx 4€ entrance) and the underground tour: [https://www.znojemskabeseda.cz/en/tourism/underground](https://www.znojemskabeseda.cz/en/tourism/underground) **Hike Details** **Duration:** Approx. 4 hours (pure walking time, not including sightseeing in Znojmo) **Distance:** Approx. 16 km **Elevation:** ↗️ 450 m up **Difficulty:** Easy (technically), but requires basic fitness due to the distance **Pace:** We’ll walk at a comfortable, social pace and take short breaks as needed **Meeting Point & Travel** **Meeting Time:** 08:30 **Meeting Location:** Praterstern station (ground floor near ticket machines, exit to platforms 1 & 2) **Departure:** Train REX3 leaves at 09:01 (presumably Platform 1–2). Please buy your own ticket before boarding the train. **Arrival:** Znojmo at 10:36 **Direct trains back to Vienna:** 14:57, 16:57, 18:57, 20:57 I recommend avoiding the last train back, just in case. **What to Expect** We will walk together as a group at a relaxed and friendly pace. This is not a race or performance hike — the focus is on enjoying nature, conversation, and a shared experience. We will stay together during the hike and take short breaks whenever useful. Please note: We do not plan to stop at huts or restaurants during the hike. **What to Bring** 🥪 Snacks and drinks (at least 1.5 liters of water) 🥾 Sturdy hiking shoes 🌧️ Basic rain protection 🧢 Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) Please note: There are no public toilets on the trail itself. **Ticket Information** The **VOR Freizeitticket** costs €19.90 for one day in Lower Austria. Important: The Einfach-Raus ticket, VOR Freizeitticket, and Klimaticket are only valid until **Retz**. You need an additional ticket for the short section between **Retz and Znojmo** (approx. €3–4 per direction). If you are unsure about ticket options, don’t worry. I will help coordinate everything at the meeting point so we can start the day in a relaxed way. **Travel documents** Since we are crossing an international border, please bring your passport or national ID card. Even without regular border checks, you are legally required to carry valid identification. Each participant is responsible for their own travel documents and entry requirements. **Disclaimer** This is a free, private leisure activity. I am not a certified hiking guide. Please join only if you feel comfortable with the distance and conditions. Everyone participates at their own responsibility. I will send a weather update to everyone registered on Thursday evening.
