A pear can be many things: an object to be measured and observed, a memory, a pattern, or the beginning of an entirely new image. In this workshop, participants explore these different ways of seeing through a combination of academic drawing and imaginative experimentation.

The workshop is split into two parts:

  1. One in which participants learn to see an object "objectively," according to 19th-century French academic drawing techniques, and a second in which they engage with it "subjectively," playing with the forms they have previously examined.
In the first half of the workshop, participants are asked to draw a pear, a classic academic exercise because of its similarities in form to the human body. Correct proportions, and how to find them using the envelope shape and straight-line construction, are the key concepts here.

  2. In the second half, participants are invited to tear apart the forms of the pear, extrapolating from its convex and concave lines and colours to create something new, such as a pattern or even a completely different object. In this way, they are introduced to subjective, playful seeing and imagination, finding new and individual ways of engaging with the world.

About your instructors:
Lana Svirezheva is a Potsdam-based artist whose work combines classical drawing and painting techniques with experimental and interdisciplinary approaches. She studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy and Sweden and holds a BA (Hons) in Painting and an MSc by Research in Interdisciplinary Creative Practices from the University of Edinburgh. Her artistic practice explores the relationship between observation, memory, and imagination, making her particularly interested in how carefully observed forms can be transformed into new images. Alongside her work as a freelance artist, she regularly teaches drawing and painting workshops for participants of different ages and experience levels.

Hannes Blume is a graphic artist from Berlin. Even though he studied at film school, these days he prefers images that don’t move. His work is heavily influenced by pop and internet culture and explores the playful and humorous interconnectedness of pictures and storytelling in cartoons, prints and digital illustrations.
