About us
**The Appalachian Mountain Club's Connecticut Chapter organizes about 1,000 hikes, bike rides, mountaineering and other events each year. Most of these do not appear in this Meetup. To get details of all of our events and to join our email lists please go to [www.CT-AMC.org](http://www.CT-AMC.org)** The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization. The CT Chapter of AMC is a statewide organization that has something for everyone who loves to explore the outdoors, for beginners or experts. We offer hiking, kayaking, cycling, trail building and maintenance and land conservation activities throughout the year. So, what sets us apart? • Trained leaders means our activities are organized, everyone stays together as a group assisting each other as needed and we follow certain safety protocols. • Group activities are open to everyone (so long as you meet the fitness and equipment requirements). Events listed as Young Members are designed for members ages 20-40 but all AMC events are open to all ages. This Meetup group is sponsored by members of the AMC Connecticut Chapter. For additional information about AMC, the CT Chapter and the activities we-sponsor, please visit [www.ct-amc.org](http://www.ct-amc.org). Thru the year, we offer more than 1000 activities. All current activities are listed on our website for each activity committee. For example, current hiking activities including skiing and snowshoeing are shown on the [chapter website](http://www.ct-amc.org/excursions/HikeListings.shtm). The AMC web site ([www.outdoors.org](http://www.outdoors.org/)) has further information about the main club including lodging, adventure travel, and more. Just a reminder that only AMC-approved leaders may lead activities that will be listed on this site. We can allow others to co-lead activities with an approved leader. If you are interested in becoming an approved leader, the next leader training is always shown [on our website](http://ct-amc.org/Education/index.shtm). **Please note:** Some events are marked "Registration Required". An RSVP here does **not** satisfy this requirement. Registration requires direct contact with the event leader, either by email or phone. \ [](http://ct-amc.org/Education/index.shtm)

Difficulty: 4 - Moderate
Trip Leader(s): Dennis Jakiela
Registration Type: Registration
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX0000016wK5
Audience: EveryoneDescription: About 6 miles and 800 ¢ cumulative elevation gain. This is a shortened version of a very popular CT Trails Day hike I have been leading for years and puts the Mt. York ascent at the beginning instead of the end of the hike. It includes both the Quinnipiac and Regicides Trails, two of the CFPA Blue Trails. We will park and meet at the intersection of Rayzoe Terrace (a dead end) and W. Shepard Rd. in Hamden. (“Street Parking for West Rock Ridge State Park” in Google Maps) From the trailhead, we will take the Regicides Trail to ascend York Mountain at elevation of 680 ¢ . From the summit, we will proceed on the Quinnipiac Trail along High Rock ridge with westward views. We will then descend and proceed at a lower elevation through a tall pine forest to the Sanford Feeder Trail. From the top of the Sanford Feeder, we will take the abandoned Baldwin Road southward and then pick up the Regicides Trail roughly parallel to Baldwin Drive for the return trip to the trailhead, with both westward and eastward viewpoints. There is a steep rock scramble at the beginning and participants should be accustomed to long hikes of 5 miles or more. Bring one to two quarts of water for hot weather. Arrive by 8:45 for 9:00 a.m. start. Leashed dogs okay. Registration requested. For more information, contact Dennis Jakiela at djakiela56@outlook.com, 203-710-1406.

Audience: EveryoneDescription: NOTE THAT THIS HIKE HAS BEEN UPDATED: Discover the beauty of Mount Higby on this rewarding hike along a traprock ridge in the heart of Connecticut. We will meet at 8:45 am at Tynan Memorial Park in Middletown. Hiking start time is 9:00 AM. Our route follows the Tynan Park Connector to join the Mattabesett Trail. As we climb, we will reach a massive rocky ridge that offers some beautiful views. Our route is about 7 miles with 1,200 ft of elevation gain. THE MILEAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED FROM 5.5 TO 7 MILES BECAUSE WE WILL CONTINUE TO THE SOUTHERN PEAK OF MT HIGBY WHICH HAS THE BEST VIEWS. This is an “out & back” hike, not a loop. Since the route is quite rocky, please wear sturdy hiking footwear. Bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. It is always a good idea to carry a personal first aid kit and let the leader know of any health conditions that you might have.
You can access a map at this link https://meridenlandtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/higby_beseck_tri.pdf and we will be following this Alltrails route https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/connecticut/mount-higby-via-tynan-park-connector-and-mattabesett-blue-trail

Introduction to Building Rock Steps and Waterbars
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Trail Work | Trail Work
Difficulty: 4 - Moderate
Trip Leader(s): James Liptack
Registration Type: Application
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX0000011nZB
Register By: 6/5/2026
Audience: EveryoneDescription: If you have ever wondered how all those rock steps and waterbars get built, or you want to hone your developing rock building skills, or maybe you just want to give back to the trail, here is your opportunity. In this workshop you will learn about all that goes into building the perfect rock step, from sizing up the job, searching for just the right rock, getting the rock to where it is needed, preparing its new home (a hole in the ground), setting the rock in place, and, finally, making sure that the hikers actually use it rather than walking around it. No experience is needed, only a desire to learn and build something that will last for generations. All tools will be provided. Bring lunch, water, and work gloves. Registration is required to ensure that enough tools are available. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Mobil gas station in Kent at the junction of US 7 and CT 341. See map at right. (41.724212N, 73.477044W) Please contact the leader if you have any questions. PLEASE NOTE ACTION REQUIRED: Federal agency land management partners enable volunteer service on the AT and extend certain protections to volunteers under the National Parks Service “Volunteers in Parks” (VIP) program. If you haven’t already signed the required form, you MUST do so prior to participation in this activity. That form can be found at this link: https://www.tfaforms.com/4876629 . (Note: The form will require that you enter, among other things, a “Group Name”. Please enter “Appalachian Mountain Club”.)
