Audience: 20’s & 30’s
Description: Frenchtown is a charming town - think small shops and cafes - that is just across the Delaware River from Pennyslvania. This 5-mile, out-and-back hike along the D & R Canal State Park Trail and Frenchtown Preserve begins at an access path just outside of the town center. We will enter the canal path and walk south along the scenic Delaware River on a wide, gravel path. About 3/4 mile later, we will turn to take a short walk -- about a 1/4 mile -- along a busy road shoulder before we enter the Frenchtown preserve.
The preserve property, a part of the D&R park, is 150 acres of woods, fields and streams. It was purchased in 2006 by the Hunterdon Land trust and the state of NJ. Once in the preserve, we will make a loop on dirt trails, seeing both groomed fields and lovely wooded sections. We will circle back to leave the same way we entered, returning to Frenchtown along the canal path. Total elevation gain is about 375 feet.
We will be leaving the trail around lunchtime, so we can stop to enjoy a tasty food truck lunch at the Wild Fern Brewery, a Frenchtown microbrewery with a warm, taproom environment.
The trails may be muddy after a rain, so wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Layer clothing according to the temperatures, and be prepared with water and a snack. Poor weather conditions may cancel the hike, so check the trip posting 2 hours before the departure time.
This trip is intended to be a 20s/30s affinity trip. Participation is limited to those who identify with this age group.
