Description: Join us for a wonderful bike tour from historic Salem back to Charlestown via mostly bike paths through the historic and bucolic towns of the near north shore. We will meet at North Station and use the MBTA to take us up to Salem for our 31-mile jaunt back to Charlestown. Highlights will include Salem, Marblehead, the tip of Castle Rock, Swampscott and the marshes of Lynn, Saugus and Evererett via the new-ish Northern Strand Bike Trail. We will have a sumptuous lunch at the K Pub Kitchen and Bar just off the bike trail in Saugus that has a unique fusion Asian-American menu. This ride is easy to moderate, at a relaxed moving pace of 10-12 mph. Bikers will be expected to be ready for paved to packed gravel surfaces. Bikes from road bikes (with good handling skills) to hybrids are fine. Bikers are expected to be able to handle minor repairs such as flat tires and have appropriate clothing/gear to handle early fall conditions and be able to carry extra clothing if the weather indicates it. Helmets required, Hi-Viz clothing and rear red Blinky lights highly recommended. Riders will self pay for the $8.00 MBTA train fare, lunch and any parking required. Ride will run in event of mildly adverse weather. Sustained rain will cancel the ride. The MBTA train leaves North Station at 0930 SHARP and arrives Salem at 1002, fare is $8. Address of N STA is MBTA North Station, 186 Canal St., Boston. Riders who want to meet us at the Salem MBTA when the train arrives at 10:04 are welcome to join the team. You can take the train from North Station back to Salem in the afternoon (trains leave North Station at 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm and 5:30pm).
