On our difficulty rating of 1 - 5 this hike is a 3. Please make sure you are ok to hike at a moderate pace for up to 6hrs before RSVPing. Maximum of 40 hikers.

Walking time: 6hrs including stops (depends on group fitness)
Walking distance: 13km
**Please note all times and distances are estimated only.

Important things for this trip:

  1. No jeans - if you turn up wearing jeans you won't be allowed to join the group
  2. Please make sure all your clothes and gear are clean. We will use the spray stations before and after entering the tracks

**This hike will involve a short car shuttle, as we will start with Dunns Bush loop and then walk the Puhoi Track (part of the Te Araroa Trail) in 1 direction to Puhoi.

Before 9am - Arrive at small carpark, end of Remiger Road. From the main road, follow Remiger Road all the way to the end where a gate will stop you going any further onto private land.
9.00am - Short car shuttle to leave cars at Puhoi end for all drivers (Puhoi Lookout Track carpark)
9.20am - Start hiking
12.00pm - Lunch break (hopefully at Sugar Loaf lookout area)
12.20pm - Resume hiking
3.20pm - Approx finish time, car shuttle to get everyone back to Puhoi
Afterwards - Pub! (optional)

Mix of walking/tramping tracks, farmland and some walking on gravel roads.
Some parts of the Dunns Bush area are quite overgrown so recommend bringing gaiters if you have them and maybe a long-sleeved shirt if you want to avoid the odd scratch. We will be walking through native bush including Kauri trees and a couple of huge Kahikatea trees.

Option afterward for a much needed refreshment stop at the Puhoi Pub.

Bring - Normal hiking gear - and have warm base layers like merino or thermal clothes on or in your pack in case of bad weather, a raincoat, hat, sunscreen, strong footwear with great grip. Food - Bring your own lunch, snacks, fruit and enough water etc (at least 2l). NO JEANS!

Suggest carpooling. Please comment when you rsvp whether you need a lift / can offer lifts, which part of Auckland and your mobile number. It’s up to you to arrange this among yourselves.

Please bring $20 cash for your driver or make arrangements to pay them via bank transfer to cover petrol and road toll costs. Northern Gateway toll is $2.30 each way and can be paid online. If you are taking the free route via Orewa please allow extra travel time from Auckland.

**Make sure you arrive on time as we need to figure out exactly how many cars to leave at Puhoi based on driver numbers. Also, try to carpool effectively and not just drive by yourself as the carpark/road parking area is very small.

Donation - Due to increased Meetup subscription costs we ask all members to contribute $1 or $2 for this hike. You can either bring a gold coin on the day or make the donation direct to our dedicated bank account:
Helen Kerslake-Forbes 06-0998-0909890-03

Any donation money remaining after our 6 monthly subscription is paid will go towards safety gear for the group.

If you can no longer attend please update your RSVP immediately to allow others to join. If you cancel within 24hrs of the event or don't turn up this will be treated as a 'no show'. 3 no shows will affect your attendance at future events.

No guests - if you have friends who want to join please get them to join Auckland Outdoors and RSVP.

I look forward to sharing this hike with you :)
